Giving away baby items

Notsureifthisisokay · 22/12/2019 12:48

Hi all! Not sure if this is allowed and I've posted in AIBU for traffic !

My son is now 6 months and I have a lot of things he has never worn or used as well as some hardly used bits. Clothes, toys, new dummies, bath seats, steriliser, nappies etc he's a very lucky little boy and family/friends have been very generous.

I don't want to chuck it out and so considered taking it all to the charity shop, however I wondered if anyone knows of anywhere more specific in West Yorkshire that I can give it to? I'd like to think it could help someone out (There is literally a full wardrobe here for a baby boy aged 3-6, 6-9 months including winter wear 🤦🏻‍♀️)

Sorry if this post is a bit random I'm just trying to think how best to help someone as we are very fortunate so just trying to share some of our luck! :-)

Contact your local foodbank as they will probably know of a local charity collecting for families. Or contact women's aid to see if they can use it.

iklboodolphrednosedreindeer · 22/12/2019 12:50

Is there a women's shelter near you? They might take them.

Notsureifthisisokay · 22/12/2019 12:53

I've no idea how to find either of those things😕 would I just google?

In the time it took you to ask that you could have just googled Grin

Trafalger · 22/12/2019 12:56

You may have a baby bank near you that takes all of those things.

Notsureifthisisokay · 22/12/2019 12:59

Haha I did think that when I pressed post 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ Ive been up half the night with ds and now I'm sat sorting his room getting emotional over all his tiny outfits that don't fit anymore so I'm blaming that and lack of sleep 😂

I asked my health visitor and she told me where was collecting for a dv shelter, you cannot usually donate direct to them as locations are not made public i think

Notsureifthisisokay · 22/12/2019 13:03

That makes sense! I'll text my health visitor now and see if she knows anywhere :-) thanks!

That Keighley Healthy Living.
There's also Bradford Baby Bank, although they tend to ask specific items as they need them

britnay · 22/12/2019 13:11

Before you give them away, are you sure that you aren't going to have any more? Could you perhaps clean them all, pack them in a labelled box and store them for a couple of years? If you decide then that you definitely aren't having any more then you could still donate them. It would seem a shame to give them all away only to decide later that you actually wanted another..

Notsureifthisisokay · 22/12/2019 13:55

@britnay I've kept about half :-) mainly the things my son has worn because I have fond memories of those :-) they've been packed in a box ready to go in the loft :-) honestly it's embarrassing how much ds was bought and I feel sad that some kids won't have that this Christmas :-( god I hope this doesn't sound like I'm gloating, I'm just feeling guilty at the waste I guess !

I donated any unused clothes to my local hospitals NICU - they can always use young baby clothes there and those that had been used but in good nick I washed and took to my local women’s shelter 😊

welshladywhois40 · 22/12/2019 15:06

Post this on your local Facebook as if there is a refuge locally - there will be a local woman who is collected for it. They can't accept donations directly.

Or google growbaby this is a national org that takes in baby items and distributes on to people who need it

TrifenyMarlowe · 22/12/2019 15:31

Tiny sizes (under 7lbs) could go to the nearest hospital neonatal unit, they're always accepting donations for that around here, lots of unexpected early births where the parents didn't buy or have the chance to buy clothing for a 24-28 weeker for example! It makes parents lives easier at what usually a very scary, occasionally traumatic, time.

Or as others said, for bigger stuff, women's shelters have always been grateful when we've passed basic items on.

paranoidmum2 · 22/12/2019 15:33

Don't you want to keep the things for a possible baby no.2, OP? Sorry if that's intrusive.

B1rdinthebush · 22/12/2019 15:40

Leeds Baby Bank are always desperate for donations! They have various drop off points too. Xx

Notsureifthisisokay · 22/12/2019 16:12

@paranoidmum2 I've kept loads :-) not intrusive we do plan another maybe two more 😛

Thanks everyone :-) I text my health visitor thinking she'd reply tomorrow and she text straight back! She's in the area on Tuesday so she's going to take some of it and give it to a couple of ladies she knows :-) pleased some good will come of it :-)

There’s a Leeds Baby Bank. Google your town name and “baby bank”, I bet you’ll find something.

pumpandthump · 22/12/2019 16:19

Huddersfield has a womens centre that will happily take them. I can put you in touch if you are local to there.
