Twist or stick re DH's present?

CloseEncountersOfTheTerfKind · 22/12/2019 12:21

Let me take you back to 2011...

Beginning of December. DH and I "shall we just do presents for the DC this year and not for each other? We can always buy something for the house in the January sales instead". This was a mutually agreed decision, in hindsight I would have got it in writing Grin

25th December. I give DH a stocking (as is tradition, only little and definitely not classed a gift). DH gives me an IPad Blush The fucking bastard Grin

This year we have had the same conversation. I am suspicious however and feel like I need to get my ducks in a row Wink I haven't bought him anything to date.

What shall I do, MNers? Stick or twist?

PS this is LIGHTHEARTED, I don't actually think he is a fucking bastard for buying me a present Smile

We do stocking only. Dh got me a blue tooth speaker last year. He got tat as the deal!!
No guilt!!
£20 limit this year but as he is skint it will be!!
Stick is my advice op.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 22/12/2019 12:24

I’d twist and buy something. Save it for his birthday if he sticks to the deal.

22Giraffes · 22/12/2019 12:25

I'd twist in your position, I like to be prepared!

DryHeaving · 22/12/2019 12:25

Twist, then save it for another occasion if he sticks

bridgetreilly · 22/12/2019 12:29

Stick, unless there's something you know he'd really like that isn't more than about £50. Definitely not an iPad!

Arthritica · 22/12/2019 12:30

Stick

GreenTulips · 22/12/2019 12:31

We did stockings only last year and I brought DH an iPad! He loves it.

he’s paid for things around the house over the year and brought me gifts, so I’m not too worried.

Natsel84 · 22/12/2019 12:43

Twist !

CloseEncountersOfTheTerfKind · 22/12/2019 13:09

We need to be able to have the voting on the app!

If I twist, I will definitely end up giving it to him, his birthday isn't until September plus I can't contain myself with things like that Blush

Actually thinking about it, I've had a shit year health wise and he has already bought me a few unexpected presents, and we aren't loaded so they have been meaningful and kind. He is a lovely DH.

I think I will get something, and if he hasn't I will save it until New Year and say it's so we have a better year than this year. Then technically it's not a Christmas present! Xmas Smile

We have agreed no presents weeks ago, but OH muttered something about maybe chocolates......

In previous years he has always had a stocking plus a main present. I have never had a stocking Sad

Anyway, I am firmly sticking with no presents and last night he looked at me in slight panic and said "you definitely haven't cheated and got me any presents have you?" So I think we are fine.

Should add that we don't live in the UK - most people here just pick up gifts in the supermarket. It's definitely too late for any last minute Amazon ordering.

keepingbees · 22/12/2019 15:29

My DH did this when we made the same agreement one year. I was presented with a pile of presents because "he couldn't not get me something." I had got him zilch Blush
I think you should get him something. Even just something small Smile

FizzyIce · 22/12/2019 15:45

Twist, my dh always gets me really noce gifts so I’d feel terrible if I hadn’t got anything for him.
It’s Christmas after all Xmas Grin

BarbedBloom · 22/12/2019 15:56

My husband did this to me the first year we were together. I gave him a few nice gifts and he gave me a laptop. Now we just buy for each other. You could always get him a token little thing just in case

CloseEncountersOfTheTerfKind · 23/12/2019 18:04

Smuggy have you told him you'd like a stocking? Make it very clear! Don't make me put you on my AIBU Bingo thread naughty list! WinkSmile

I have twisted, and ordered DH some sketching stuff (he is an artist). In fairness he needs some anyway, and whilst it's expensive, it's a day to day thing for him more than a "treat" and a present if that makes sense? So I think I have covered all bases!

I shall of course let you all know (I know you'll all be on the edges of your seats on Christmas Day worrying about this Grin)

@CloseEncountersOfTheTerfKind PLEASE not the bingo thread. I would be so, so ashamed.

The stocking thing is odd. I do (did) get a selection of smaller presents which I would consider to be worthy of being in a stocking - they just never literally are IYSWIM.

On the plus side though, an actual parcel and a card arrived yesterday from DS. This has to be a first - I almost shed a tear. He is a lovely, lovely lad but seems to have not acquired the gene for sending cards and presents. His Grandma got a card too - do you suppose he has been taken over by aliens?

CloseEncountersOfTheTerfKind · 25/12/2019 16:11

Oh Smuggy I hear you Smile, they're just growing up, I just said earlier how nice it is that our DC don't wake us up at 4am screaming about Father Christmas are old enough to buy presents and take pleasure in giving them. I received such thoughtful cards and gifts I'll stop now in case I start saying I feel blessed and I'm making memories Blush

Resuming normal MN service - we almost had an AIBU, and slightly fraught, moment when a younger teen wanted to meet up with friends the minute we finished the turkey. For a brief moment I stropped the house was divided over whether this was acceptable - the majority prevailed (this is why an an odd number of DC is useful Grin) and we are all reconvening later near the TV when everyone has done their respective socialising/napping/Mumsnetting. In retrospect it was the right decision. Everyone is happy and relaxed.

I hope you are all having an equally cheering and peaceful, drama free happy Christmas.

Oh FF that post was meant for my MN Xmas Bingo thread Blush and now seems hopelessly smug and not very relevant to this thread. Dear me.

Anyway. On this thread I meant to say that you were all right, thank goodness! DH had indeed bought me a present (lovely slippers - that seems a trifle elderly but I have cold feet and complain about them constantly and these are lovely slippers.) He loved his present from me. So we both got to say "but we weren't doing presents!" and feel simultaneously aggrieved and happy Smile It's a win!

Happy Christmas all BrewCakeXmas Smile
