To think I should be with eating disorders services

I’m with the cmht but am struggling with eating. I’m now 12 pounds underweight and have to go and get urgent blood tests. I’m worried why I’m not being transferred to the eating disorder team rather than cmht. I have risk behaviours but would assume the eating disorder team could manage that.

What is your height & weight, now?
Have you asked for an ED team referral.
I think you can have referrals open to multiple teams at same time, doesn't have to be only one team involved.

You should be, but not surprised that you are not. Even when you finally get onto there service there is still long waiting list for counselling or other forms of treatment. Ask everyone who sees you for a referral. I took DD to A and E as she was having blackouts their referral helped. It’s dangerous system that you need to be a certain weight for referral but at this point the illness is at its most powerful.

I have asked yes

This is somewhat different from your last post this week where you said your difficulty with eating wasn't an ED, it was 'just' part of your MH.

Perhaps you are gaining some insight into your illness, which can only be a positive thing, but this does sound like a fairly extreme flip from your opinion just a few days ago, so I'm wondering whether you're trying to deflect away from a diagnosis or treatment plan?

However, having the blood test results could well trigger a referral on if they show something that doesn't suggest a physical cause - especially if you are honest about your behaviour and feelings around food and request specialist input from them.

I hope that you are able to get the appropriate diagnosis and treatment, whatever the cause.

TBH the service will not be that different to what you are receiving unless you are deemed to need a unit. You can ask to also be referred to a dietician. You are already doing well as you can see you need help and are willing to ask for it. That is a huge positive and a show of strength.

Some ED services have specific criteria, including BMI. Not saying it’s right, by the way, as EDs can affect people at any weight but it’s how they manage things. Do you have a care coordinator?

busyweeks78 · 22/12/2019 12:00

Yes I do have a care coordinator. From what I can tell Ed services here don’t have a a bum you need to be to get help which is why I’m confused.

My gp won’t refer me I’ve been told it has to come from my psychiatrist.

Did you not post this week saying you didn't have an eating disorder and that you objected strongly to even going for the blood tests, that your therapist was wrong?

MitziK · 22/12/2019 12:28

As your Psych was the one who was urging you to get the bloods done, I'd expect that they are eliminating any physical causes/need for additional treatment with a view to referring you on.

If you are malnourished, there are vitamins that you desperately need that are given when a blood test shows the levels of deficiency make them necessary - in my area, for example, vitamin D can only be given in injection form when the serum levels are incredibly low, is only prescribed as high dose tablets when very low and the rest of the time, will not be funded and you'll be told to buy the normal OTC ones - but you're supposed to also have additional blood tests afterwards to check for other deficiencies being masked. Vitamin D deficiency can also cause MH symptoms, as can B deficiencies, and both can cause serious (as in lifethreatening) conditions if left undiagnosed/untreated.

Anaemia is potentially deadly, as is vitamin C deficiency, osteoporosis can lead to fatal fractures, pain, deformity, etc, too.

If any of those things are present, the Psych will have the information needed to make a referral or to instigate additional treatment. But they can't assume and make a referral beforehand.

Boulshired · 22/12/2019 12:30

Depending on areas the ED team is part of the MH team, many of them doing crossover including counsellors. Your care team may already have experience in this area.

Fallofrain · 22/12/2019 12:56

In our area the care of people with eating disorders is mostly managed by the community mental health team.

There is a specialist team but they have a very strict criteria so most are managed by cmht. The criteria is bases off many things including bmi, blood results, ecg, etc

lyralalala · 22/12/2019 12:59

You need to book those blood tests

They will be part of the pathway that gets you moved to the next step

Please stop stalling and book them

busyweeks78 · 22/12/2019 13:20

I have booked them but she has said she’s will be receiving the results and booking an appointment to follow up on them.
