To ask negatives of Ring Doorbell

Was thinking of getting one but someone mentioned on another thread that there have been negatives to it.

Interested to hear what the pros and especially the cons of this are. Did a quick google search and all seems positive but want to hear what the negatives are.

@BorisForPM Already happening in China.

So, you have to pay to have everything recorded? Who records it and stores the recordings? Not you I assume. I think that if you have one of these you should have to have a big sign on your house so that people can choose whether they want a large corporation to store films of them ( and their movements, who they're connected to etc). And no, it's not the same as council CCTV.
I can see how it's useful if you are disabled, but no need for a camera like that to be connected to anyone else. The unconnected (to an external company) kind of door cameras have been around for a long time.

Drizzzle · 21/12/2019 23:07

LittleReindeer very useful if you are disabled or don't want to open the door to certain people.

CFlemingSmith · 21/12/2019 23:09

To those saying their internet isn’t fast enough, you can get mains connected ones so it’s flawless.
Also, you can adjust the settings so it doesn’t alert to every one and everything that goes past if you’re on a residential street.

NamechangeoutedbyMIL · 21/12/2019 23:10

I don't have one because I have a nightmare that someone rings my doorbell in the middle of the night and I look at my phone to see who it is and the girl from the ring is standing there... misses point of thread

windthatbobbin · 21/12/2019 23:12

I have one - it's great. As a PP said, if you hardwire the power the time lag issue doesn't apply.

BetweenTheMoon · 21/12/2019 23:18

As I just said on the other thread, google about their data and data security (I appreciate the irony of saying google who are the largest data miners...).

Lots of stuff that totally put me off getting one. We just stuck with our closed circuit CCTV set up instead.

AndWhatNext · 21/12/2019 23:18

I have the Ring floodlight in by back garden and Ring Spotlight in front garden.

Get notifications if someone is there and can talk 2 way but they cannot actively ring/call me.

Much prefer it. I don't want someone being able to contact me but I want to be able to see if someone is there.

Had a parcel delivery recently and got an alert saying someone was in my front garden. Talked to the delivery person and asked him to leave it in a particular place.

Cecilia2016 · 21/12/2019 23:23

I have ring doorbell 2 for the past 2 years and I like it.

itsbeenalongtime · 21/12/2019 23:24

@NamechangeoutedbyMIL oh heck...afraid to open the notification that's just popped up on my phone now 😬😂

Dyrne · 21/12/2019 23:26

Get a wired in one, solves the battery and delay problems; and set the app so that you don’t get notifications every time there’s movement.

Great peace of mind for us; the £100/year to access and save video is well worth it to us and much cheaper than a lot of other alarm/response systems etc.

lilgreen · 21/12/2019 23:28

Because it’s obvious you’re not home.

drcb83 · 21/12/2019 23:29

We have 6 (doorbell and stickup) over two countries as we live apart - is great to be able to login from another country even to see what is going on! 100% sold on them!

StatisticallyChallenged · 21/12/2019 23:30

So far ours is fairly good.

Con - the app has a minor issue with some samsung phones and you have to make sure you talk in to the top speaker or the person can't hear you.

There is occasionally a lag on the alert coming through to phone but seconds.

We have ours linked to phones and Alexa so it can be quite funny if we are in the livingroom - you can hear the actual bell, then Alexa chimes and announces "someone is at the front door", then both our phones go off! Better than the old doorbell which couldn't be heard everywhere.

BillyAndTheSillies · 21/12/2019 23:45

I've just mentioned on the other thread that my PIL's had their car stolen a few months ago from their driveway. The thieves used a WiFi jammer to stop the ring recording, if getting a new one I'd get it hard wired.

Thunderpunt · 21/12/2019 23:50

We have one and it's great.

We also have the plug in Ring door chime so the doorbell rings in the house rather than just on the app. (I'm the only one with the app, frankly I'm the only one that ever answers the door normally anyway.... 'muuuuumm there's someone at the door' Angry)

You don't have to subscribe and you can use the 'live' stuff FOC - so answer doorbell rings, view any motions live etc. but it's only £24 a year and good to be able to view stuff retrospectively (neighbor had his catalytic converter nicked from car on driveway last week and it was all captured and handed over to police)

Ours isn't hardwired but no lagging for us so maybe just depends on your internet speeds?

Lifecraft · 22/12/2019 10:29

If you just want to use it in "live" mode, there's no subscription to pay

What’s the point of that? Without the ability to record video and save photos it’s pretty much useless imo.

The point is that you don't have to pay a subscription, as was suggested. Live view only is still useful, to see who's at the door whether you are in or out, and to talk to them. You can tell a delivery driver that you'll be back soon, so leave the parcel down the side, or whatever. Or if you are in and don't want to answer the door to some religious crackpot or tea towel seller, you can tell them to bugger off.

TrappedInThatBrightMoment · 22/12/2019 12:46

We have the Ring 2 doorbell, and it’s the best thing since sliced bread. At this time of year I’ve had numerous conversations with the postman/amazon driver/ etc and they’ve all been fine

As far as I can see, we have only two issues with the Ring 2

(1) if I ‘answer’ the doorbell in a noisy area it can be difficult to work out what each other are saying, but that would be the same fir a phone call

(2) if it’s a bright sunny afternoon then I start getting false movement detection when passing vehicles reflect the sun, but that’s ok because I’ve setup a rule in the app that stops movement notifications between two and five
