upset - end of work

tempjobgone · 21/12/2019 21:32

I've been doing some temping work for a local office for the last 2 months nothing fancy but its given me some money. i just checked my email and they have sent me a message saying not to come back after the new year as they won't have enough work and thanking me for everything i have done for them.
I knew it could happen but the way they told me in an email really stung.

I'm sorry OP. I got made redundant yesterday - it's absolutely awful timing and they way they did it was awful!

tempjobgone · 21/12/2019 21:50

sorry to hear about your redundancy. I hope you move on to something even better.
thank god I already paid for the christmas presents.
thanks.

I’m sorry OP. I think sometimes people can be a bit dismissive of temps and don’t always treat them as well as they could. It would have been much nicer to have told you in person on your last day, or even a phone call really.

blueshoes · 21/12/2019 22:08

If it is a big team, the manager probably was caught up in the crush of the run up to Christmas and might have left it too late, hence an email. It is not great but I think if you are temping, you are going to have to develop a thicker skin.

I doubt permanent employees get much more thought put into their feelings by management. In the team I currently work, people of all stripes come and go so often it is difficult to keep up.

Dixiechickonhols · 21/12/2019 22:08

It may be thoughtless or maybe felt bad at timing and couldn’t face telling you. I’d respond saying you’ve enjoyed the role and please get in contact should any new job opportunities arise with your contact details.

Absolutely this. You were a temp, so they've let you go, which is fine. Just be professional and they may ask you back in future.

1Morewineplease · 21/12/2019 22:49

In all fairness you were temping and it seems that the company no longer need your input.
I’m sorry if you thought that more work would be forthcoming but it’s clear that it isn’t.
Best to move on.

FabbyChix · 21/12/2019 22:50

That’s real rude.: you. Pups have told the agency free and lines something up

ClutterbuckFarm · 21/12/2019 22:54

Yeah sorry OP. Uncertainty around employment is horrible. I hope you find a new role soon.

tempjobgone · 22/12/2019 11:38

I don't have a problem with the work ending as it's the way it goes but with the way that they told me.

i did a one day a week job for 3 years and they emailed me, gutted i was

cowards op, they took the cowards way out.

hazell42 · 22/12/2019 12:27

That's shit.
Unfortunately permanent employers aren't always better
I had been in a role for 5 years when I handed in my notice
Worked the full month, made sure all my case work was up to date, wrote notes on everything.
On my last day, I got nothing except a throwaway, 'Oh by the way thanks and good luck' as I put my coat on and headed out the door. He wasn't even looking at me when he said it
My boss was an arsehole, but it still hurt.
A lot, actually

PlomBear · 22/12/2019 12:55

Employers simply don’t care. I’m always baffled when people talk about being loyal and devoted to an organisation. It’s just a job. 🤷🏻‍♀️

A company doesn’t have thoughts and feelings, it’s not a sentient being.

I’m sorry OP but that’s just how temping goes. I’m sure you’ll find something in the New Year.

Glitteryone · 22/12/2019 13:12

I’m a recruitment manager and I would expect these conversations to happen verbally. However on occasion my team has had to do it by email (when not able to reach the worker by phone). Did you have any missed calls from them?

I appreciate that this is very difficult news just before Christmas. If I could give you any advice it would be to reply to the agency and ask them to keep you in mind for upcoming opportunities. Also, register with as many agencies in your local area as possible - they’ll each work with different clients and it will give you the best chance of securing something. Most should be open Monday & possibly Tuesday, if you have time try to do it this side of Christmas.

Good luck!
