To think this amount of onselling is ridiculous?

Was in a shop today, was v v busy as the lead up towards xmas so to be expected.

However lady at the till tried to onsell me
-a box of chocolates
-mince pies
-christmas crackers
-cheap christmas cards (admittedly v cheap but I'd happily pay more for the privelege of not having to store them all year and mine are all done for this year)

After about the second 'no thank you' I told her I really wasn't interested in getting any extras. She told me that she had to offer it all to me in case I saw the offers and changed my mind. She said her manager said she has to offer it all.

Obviously I'm not blaming her at all, having worked in retail before I know what it's like, but AIBU to think that on the manager/head office's part, this is ridiculous? The lines were massive today, and yes that's because it's nearly xmas but also the fact that they're making the employees state all these offers with every transaction probably isn't helping.

It's up selling 🙄

LemonAndGin · 21/12/2019 19:58

Was it B&M Bargains by any chance.., that sounds remarkably like my experience there today!

adhdme2019 · 21/12/2019 19:59

You mean upsell

SD1978 · 21/12/2019 20:02

I get you were frustrated- but she could be disciplined or lose her job by not doing it. An email to the store praising her customer service, but complaining that store policy dictates so many offers being offered, would maybe be the way to go?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 21/12/2019 20:06

I don't answer the questions. Don't engage.

Just offer your cash/debit card to pay.

They stop then.

SD1978 · 21/12/2019 20:14

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon - it's not their fault though that they have to follow company policy? Totally ignoring someone who is giving you a service seems pretty rude.

Sparklingbrook · 21/12/2019 20:17

I have never been offered that amount of additions to my shopping. [shock[ B&M offer me the chocolate bar that's on the till at the time, and Savers offer me fragrance and batteries. But it doesn't take long to say no thanks.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 21/12/2019 20:43

WH Smith is the worst, in my experience (and the main reason along with the prices I never go in there anymore)

Sparklingbrook · 21/12/2019 20:45

Self Serve in WH Smith, it asks you on the screen if you want the stuff but you can just press no.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 21/12/2019 20:46

It's not rude. It zaps my energy to be asked endless questions when all I want to do is say 'hi' and then pay. If anything, they're being rude.

I find it tedious and exhausting.

I mostly shop online but the occassional time I go into shop I don't want to be upsold shite at the till. If I wanted it I'd have already picked it up.

Newschapter · 21/12/2019 20:48

Savers is the only place I've ever been that they do this.

doritosdip · 21/12/2019 20:49

At least it's not a shop that has a loyalty scheme and SIM cards to offer too.

It is crap from a consumer point of view but I know from my ds who works in retail that there are targets and there is sometimes financial incentives for the employee too.

Booboooo · 21/12/2019 20:51

Poundshop is the worst. They offer the chocolate and batteries at the till. Then ask if you want raffle tickets for a children's charity. When i said no thank you she said "well if you dont want to enter the raffle you could still donate us the pound!"

Sparklingbrook · 21/12/2019 20:53

I don't see how following employers instructions can be deemed rude. Confused

PristineCondition · 21/12/2019 20:55

They don't want to offer all that shite to you. Be polite and then write to head office.
Never take it out on the ones forced to do it for a wage

Sparklingbrook · 21/12/2019 20:59

I worked in a bank years ago. During my time on the tills they started getting us to look for 'leads'. So if someone came to the counter with a shiny new engagement ring, or carrying a car magazine we had to try and get them chatting about loans. Someone would monitor us. What a joy that was. Hmm This initiative didn't last long surprise surprise.

carlywurly · 21/12/2019 21:00

I also hate being asked for personal details when I just want to pay. They really don't need my full postal address and email when I'm buying a top. Joules, white stuff, white company are awful offenders

Lulualla · 21/12/2019 21:01

WH Smith have been getting worse with the upselling. It's used to be one chocolate bar, but now it's different brands of chocolate bars and then a book etc etc. Its a bloody pain.
