Postman at xmas trying the door handle for a signed delivery. Is this normal?

Our car is normally up the drive but my OH was out buying Christmas presents. I heard a knock at the door and went to answer but before I got there I got a fright when the door handle suddenly went (although thankfully the door was locked). I opened the door to a postie who had a hand-held device for signing for a parcel. It was legit - the device had my surname and the package was addressed to me. I tried to get a good look at him as I thought it was strange to try a door handle but he had a baseball hat on and was staring at the ground.

I understand if perhaps he was doing me a favour by leaving my parcel inside so I didn't have to walk a mile to the sorting office - but was he also planning on faking my signature too? I know a lot of extra posties are recruited at Christmas but do they carry out thorough background checks?

We were burgled a few years ago by someone who took a wrench to our old back window (old and wooden - now pvc and alarmed) so perhaps I'm more suspicous than normal. We do not have a porch - it's very clearly the only door to the house - is this normal behaviour for a postie?

Inside your actual house or porch though??

Our postpersons are advised to try the door and chuck post into the porch as our letterbox is lethal.

I’ve never experienced it at home (always lived in cities) but my in laws live in a hamlet and know their postman by name...in return, he knows where the front door key is kept and unlocks the door to leave packages just inside.

I learnt this a few days ago when I was there by myself, dozing with my baby in the park in the kitchen and woke up to hear him letting himself in! He waved, explained and wished me a happy Christmas. I think it’s much more common in the countryside?

I'd never heard of this until I saw another thread a few days asking about it.

We've never had a front door with a handle, only ones that can be opened by key so never had it happen. But we have lived in London all our life so leaving a door unlocked is unheard of, doubt the postie would even try.

Our postman the other day was walking around the back of the house to try and find an open window to post the package through. Didn't bother me (he had knocked first but I was slow to get to the door). But we're in the country and I know him
