Why do old white men hate Greta Thunberg so much?

MotherOfDragonite · 21/12/2019 15:57

My 65 year old uncle and friends of a similar age (and also white, though not necessarily all British -- others are American, German and Australian) seem to talk about her an awful lot with great vitriol and hatred.

They seem to have shared views about climate change, but I still can't understand why they hate Greta so much. Not only do they comment on her, but they post unpleasant memes about her. While I understand that they fundamentally disagree with the concept of climate change, I don't really understand why a 16 year old girl with Aspergers, who does not live in the UK and who clearly has good intentions even if they disagree with them, is the focus of so much of their ire.

What is it about Greta that older men find so very "triggering"?

@larrygrylls: it's nothing to do with being "woke".

Awareness of environmental issues has been around since "Silent Spring" was published in the early '60s, if not earlier. I read Rattray Taylor's "Doomsday Book" 50 years ago, and found it alarming. We knew CFCs were fucking up the ozone layer in the 70s and thought this might be the cause of warmer seas. A little later, Lovelock recognised the complexity of the biosphere and even if his science was wrong his vision was pretty sound.

"Woke" wasn't even a thing then, so please don't try to minimise these concerns as some sort of faddish lefty posturing. Your grandkids', possibly even your kids' futures may depend on this.

BerwickLad · 21/12/2019 19:28

Yeah, I remember the panic about the ozone hole in the sky. Which has now closed over. Phew, disaster averted.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 21/12/2019 19:36

I will listen to scientists not a 16 yr old on a social media PR stunt.

Hepsibar · 21/12/2019 19:37

Yes, you are so right ... I hadnt spotted this.

There is something about her which takes a lot of them right out of their comfort zone, it's the passion on the subject, the lack of focus on only money, that she doesnt want to be all smiley with them, that she is right!

But we'll never know if it would have closed over if CFCs hadn't started to be withdrawn from about 1980, and then ultimately banned in 1987. Wink

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 21/12/2019 19:40

Yeah, I remember the panic about the ozone hole in the sky. Which has now closed over. Phew, disaster averted.

It hasn't closed. It has shrunk, due to human efforts to undo what we had done with CFCs, and it shrank more than usual this year, due to unusual weather conditions.

Skidzer · 21/12/2019 19:43

it shrank more than usual this year, due to unusual weather conditions.

Like global warming or something?

BerwickLad · 21/12/2019 19:45

Or maybe due to natural variations ? 😮

larrygrylls · 21/12/2019 19:45

We are all irrelevant...in the long run, including Greta. The cult of the young is silly.

@HowlsMovingBungalow yes, she’s saying what the scientists are saying ......

DeeCeeCherry · 21/12/2019 19:54

Yes it's not just old white men that don't like her BUT they are the ones putting up such memes as 'Once she discovers dick she'll forget all about climate change'.

I saw a guy called out on FB re this - he's almost 60, & has daughters & grandaughers! & on the thread loads of middle-aged/older guys found it hilarious. I know him as an acquaintance, was shocked that he thinks like this much less would put up such a meme.

It was women and younger men who were saying hang on, you're out of order.

Skidzer · 21/12/2019 20:00

Pervy dick memes are not reflective of older white men in general are like. Mercifully.
I've a couple on my FB (handful of friends). One posts about money and tractors a lot, the other posts prayers a lot (neighbour of mine from home), and the other one sends me Christmas trees as part of his mass onslaught lol

Boireannachlaidir · 21/12/2019 20:06

So it's okay to stereotype people if they're white, male and old? Hmm

Hope this idiotic thread gets zapped.

BoneyBackJefferson · 21/12/2019 20:14

I suspect that it is because if you don't like all of what greta has to say you will be instantly rounded on and savaged.

Lets ignore the environmental damage that building the yacht did.
lets ignore the environmental damage that building the humvee that the old white man lent her to go a berate workers in.

lets ignore the environmental cost of her flying her camera crew around
lets ignore the sitting on the floor in an overcrowded train when she had a booked seat in first class.
and lets also forget that she is talking about projections that get increasing further out the further in to the future that we look

But lets pretend that it is all facts and not some facts and some fear.

BerwickLad If you want to know, this is what NASA said.

The annual ozone hole reached its peak extent of 6.3 million square miles (16. 4 million square kilometers) on Sept. 8, and then shrank to less than 3.9 million square miles (10 million square kilometers) for the remainder of September and October, according to NASA and NOAA satellite measurements. During years with normal weather conditions, the ozone hole typically grows to a maximum area of about 8 million square miles in late September or early October.

“It’s great news for ozone in the Southern Hemisphere,” said Paul Newman, chief scientist for Earth Sciences at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “But it’s important to recognize that what we’re seeing this year is due to warmer stratospheric temperatures. It’s not a sign that atmospheric ozone is suddenly on a fast track to recovery.”

ListeningQuietly · 21/12/2019 20:29

Even those who fought in the war, for her right to freedom of speech?
How many ww2 veterans are in government today

WorraLiberty · 21/12/2019 20:35

Listening what does that have to do with my reply to the poster who said .... "She reminds old men of their irrelevance, failure and mortality"?

If you're going to quote me, at least do it in context.

ListeningQuietly · 21/12/2019 20:38

Worra
I did not quote your name
I quoted a sentiment which is oft stated and never accurate

WorraLiberty · 21/12/2019 20:52

You quoted my exact reply to PaddyF0dder

ListeningQuietly · 21/12/2019 20:55

Do you deny that the WW2 reference is now bilge as those who fought are NOT those who govern?

Skidzer · 21/12/2019 20:58

NOBODY FUCKING CARES!

Skidzer · 21/12/2019 20:59

Now stop fighting. Are you two?

WorraLiberty · 21/12/2019 21:03

Listening it has nothing to do with my reply.

"She reminds old men of their irrelevance, failure and mortality"

"Even those who fought in the war, for her right to freedom of speech?"

Neither me nor the poster were talking about government.
