It's a parking one

I live in a street where there is a turning point in the corner. There has been a car parked in the turning point for at least 6-8 weeks which to the best of my knowledge hasn't moved (the windscreen wipers have been in the same position). I had never seen the car on the street before it was parked there, but I don't go all the way down to the bottom so there's a chance I've just missed it. I've checked the tax and MOT and they expired a good few months ago, one of them more than 6 months ago. Prior to this people/visitors did park there but only on a short term basis. It was basically an extra visitor space.

I don't think it's fair for someone to leave their car there indefinitely so have considered reporting it for being untaxed. My question is WIBU to do it without knocking on my neighbours doors first? I'm reluctant to do it because 1) I don't own the road so have no right to know anything about the car, really, and 2) if I did and the owner opted not to do anything, they would know it was me who reported it.

I'm prepared to be told to mind my own business but it just seems unfair for one person to monopolise this extra space that was previously benefiting the whole street.

Is just call the non emergency police number and report an abandoned vehicle

You can report to your council. I've done it before. They served a notice to say it's not taxed etc on the car windscreen, then it was towed.

Report it. A CF neighbour abandoned a motor home where people parked and it took up so much space. Reported and got a cal back to say they had x time to get rid or tax and insure it. Within 5 days it was gone. They have now got a caravan which takes up more space but because it's not on the road (is on a public road but not on the highway so it's legal annoyingly) but reporting does work. If they can't get a hold of the owner they will put notices on the car and eventually get it taken away

Untaxed vehicle on public road (illegal). Report on DVLA website.

boboboo · 21/12/2019 15:34

Is it bad if I don't check with my neighbours first, though?

No, just report it anonymously. If it's on the public highway, it should be taxed.

Wolfiefan · 21/12/2019 15:36

If they’re the sort to leave an untaxed vehicle on the road and in a turning circle then I would doubt they’d be reasonable and rectify the situation. Just report it.

The way some people are these days I wouldn’t bother. You could be in for a load of abuse from someone who feels they have the right to park there and don’t want you sticking your nose in. Just report it if it’s in the way.

TheReluctantCountess · 21/12/2019 15:47

Just report it.

boboboo · 21/12/2019 15:55

Thanks all, I just feel terrible about potentially getting a neighbour in to trouble, even if they don't have any regard for their neighbours themselves!

Don’t speak to the neighbours if you want the car gone.

If you speak to them and they say it’s wee Johnny my nephews car and he’s just parked it there as he lost his job and can’t afford to mot and tax it yada yada you will feel sorry and it will stay there. Possibly indefinitely.

If on the other hand that’s ok and it’s not really in anyone’s way them by all means speak to the neighbours on the knowledge you may have to look at it for months.

If they don’t know whose it is you’ll contact the correct place per the posts above and report it. So id just cut to the chase and report it now. Nobody knows it’s you. No blame can be apportioned to you. Your tyres won’t get slashed by wee Johnny when he returns in two months time to tax his car and finds it gone, shopped by you after eight weeks of lying there once you finally got fed up and it turns out Johnny was actually in the jail for tyre slashing.....

Perhaps I should stopping writing a load of crap....

Yeah, report say nowt to anyone.
