The lower earner should claim the child benefit?

Hopefully a quick one. I earn over 60k but I understand I should still apply for child benefit and not actually claim it as:
A. It will build my national insurance credits
B. DC will get a national insurance number

DP earns under 60k but can still tick the box not to claim the money (as we'd be eligible to pay it back with me earning over 60k). Would it not be better for him to claim it and build his state pension? Or is it just to have a continuous record in the case someone takes time out from work to raise the kids? I'm just not sure I understand it...

YANBU: DP should 'claim'
YABU: I should 'claim'

You dont need to claim child benefit for the child to get a national insurance number.

I'm just showing what the website says. If there has never been a CB claim in for the child then in some cases they may need to apply for their NI number

From another .Gov page:

If you’re a UK resident aged 19 or under

You’ll normally be sent a National Insurance number automatically, in the 3 months before your 16th birthday, if both the following are true:

  • you live in the UK
  • a parent has filled in aChild Benefitclaim form for you

If you’re aged 16 to 19 and did not get one, call HM Revenue and Customs.

You can claim child benefit without actually receiving it, to ensure you get the nino card. That’s what I’m doing because we both earn too much now, but I wanted to keep the claim going. It’s also easier to switch the payments back on again.

A child gets an NI number when they first go into the NI system, either when there is a claim for CB or later on when they are of working age and eligible to pay NI.

They may have to apply for an NI number rather than it being issued automatically but I think given the numbers who no longer claim CB, in future that will be a straightforward process like an online form.

NI cards have not been issued for years. They just send a letter with the number.

Yeah, it was just a letter dd got this year
