Usually not for the better, but there are exceptions, I’m sure.

Which threads have had a lasting impact on the site in your view?

It's opened up my eyes and changed the way I view poverty.

I didn't really believe in it: I had NO idea so many people in our country (I mean the UK) struggle - the threads "I can't afford san pro and my period is heavy" or "I've got £xxx for two weeks what can I feed my kids" really impacted me. I've been more generous to food banks and more grateful for what I have.

I'm disappointed in our country that people have to live that way.

pizzadipyum · 20/12/2019 20:01

Do you believe them all?

It's interesting to see cultural differences, on the occasions that they can get discussed without it being a bunfight anyway.

Smelborp · 20/12/2019 20:04

Penis beaker was a milestone.

I seem to recall one New Year’s Eve when everything kicked off but I can’t remember any details so it obviously wasn’t that impactful.

Whilst some of the poverty threads may not be real, some are and they do reflect the poverty some people are living in. It’s well documented that some people have to choose between food and heating or rent. Schools are reporting lots of children who won’t have much food apart from their school dinner.

TooleyVanDooley · 20/12/2019 20:04

I think it’s the cumulative effect rather than specific threads. There’s so much I just don’t believe.

pizzadipyum · 20/12/2019 20:08

I’m sure some posters are living in actual poverty, but there have been so many scammers and chancers I don’t believe a lot of them any more.

Yes to penis beaker.

That people still judge others based on how they hold their cutlery Grin

On a serious note - for me it's the stories shared with me earlier this year when I posted following a terrible loss, those people who came together on my post to let me know that, as alone as I felt at the time, I truly wasn't - that is the side of Mumsnet that keeps me coming back.

IAmTheZombie changed my life forever. I miss her so much. She was so funny, kind, sincere, wise and brave.

After PenisBeaker things have never been quite the same sniff

I came across a thread yesterday about a man with a large penis leaving it on show in the changing room of a swimming pool. The replies had me howling with laughter, it was only then I realised it was a zombie thread and was from 2011 or roundabouts. Made me realise how much the site has changed Xmas Confused

shemakesmewaitonabedofnails · 20/12/2019 20:58

Well this thread might change me because I always believe everything (well assume a bit of embellishment / saving face) but I assume that if someone's bothered to write a post it must be mainly true? Who on earth would write a post saying "I've got a fiver, help me feed my family" to what end?!? Baffling.

kristallen · 20/12/2019 21:23

Me too shemakesmewait.

Parking threads have changed how detailed I make diagrams of things now! 😂

More seriously though the wisdom of some posters on the relationships board has completely changed how I view the world, how I view boundaries and made me realise just how much society conditions girls to accept - and even expect - behaviour from men that wouldn't be tolerated in women. That's a generalisation, but one I see again and again in RL around me too.

The Lacies are awesome

And those threads (on part 73 now) are definitely one of the very best bits of MN

Which was changed this year with the four deaths in four months earlier this year

RIP Leslie ainlessly purple and TQ

Two of whom were Woolly Huggers - another fabulous force for good
