Restless leg syndrome (RLS)- AIBU to ask what meds you're on?

My GP has just changed my asthma inhaler to Symbicort. I am going out of my mind with RLS.
The meds are addressing my asthma, but I can't continue taking it as I'm up all night every night with RLS.

I've finally gotten to a place where my meds had been sorted.

I'm on other medication also, but none that affect RLS, or none that I can identify as the culprit. There was a period of 2 months where I was taken off all meds, and I didn't suffer with RLS then, so I'm starting to think that it's the meds causing this.

Can I ask you to share what medication you're on if you suffer from RLS? I'm particularly interested in asthma medication and also meds for depression.

Sorry to ask.

I take magnesium supplements before bed.... and haven't had issues since! I take about 800mg

Skidzer · 20/12/2019 07:08

To clarify, I mean what meds you're on not related to RLS.

When I was on sertraline for depression I had awful restless legs. It was one of the reasons I stopped taking it.

HalyardHitch · 20/12/2019 07:09

Try rubbing magnesium oil into your legs every night and taking an iron supplement

Skidzer · 20/12/2019 07:13

Thanks for the responses.

I'm looking for the culprit in this, not the solution. I don't mean to be rude, but I didn't ask for suggestions on how to stop it, I asked what meds you're on if you suffer with RLS.

I'm going to have to stop symbicort. I stopped it for two days - NO RLS, went back on it, RLS keeping me up all night.

But there has to be some other medication that I'm on causing it. The other one I'm on is lansoprazole.

RLS is not contraindicated on any of the meds I'm on. But then again, it's not something people report and I suspect that like me, people find it hard to make the correlation.

Quetiapine drove me haywire also with RLS so had to stop that after 2 days. I'm not on other antidepressants but that one drove me mad. I know it has to be something in the medication I'm on habitually.

I have restless legs and I'm on lanzoprazole and cerelle. I'm nearly 52 so menopausal age and considering stopping the cerelle. Even though it is taken without breaks, when I come to the end of a pack my legs get worse.

I take pramipexole for restless legs.

Skidzer · 20/12/2019 07:21

I'm also on pramipexole. Interesting that you're also on lansoprazole.

Time for another GP appointment I think. I suspect lansoprazole may well be the culprit as thinking back, RLS would have started around that time - when I was first put on it. I can't remember whether I had RLS before that as it's about 8 years ago.

dh is on sertraline and plays for England every night in his sleep!

Skidzer · 20/12/2019 07:28

Btw I'm with you to anyone suffering from RLS. It's unbelievable.

OP posts:
Skidzer · 20/12/2019 07:29

The pramipexole isn't hitting it with the symbicort and didn't with the quetiapine either. But it does work normally.

DH takes Phenergan to help with RLS. Before that I got woken up with being kicked. RLS is a symptom of the many drugs he is on. Has helped

jcurve · 20/12/2019 07:33

Have you had your ferritin tested?

Skidzer · 20/12/2019 07:33

Susanne - do you mind me asking what drugs he's on?

I'm trying to find out which bastard of a drug is causing this.

OP posts:
Skidzer · 20/12/2019 07:35

@jcurve Yes, all iron tests are fine.

I've suffered with RLS for years. I've just identified the correlation between the new inhaler and crazy symptoms of it, so now I'm starting to look at the other meds I'm on to see what might be causing it in the first place.

And just to mention, it doesn't just affect my legs, it affects my whole body.

I had restless for years and wasn't on any medication. It got worse in the winter and better in the summer. Turns out it was down working night shifts sleeping during the day and the clocks going back, all down to lack of daylight. Changed jobs, changed sleep pattern and it all disappeared 👍🏼 Until I got pregnant 🤰

Skidzer · 20/12/2019 07:48

MrsWhy this is definitely affected by medication for me.

It's 7.47 and I haven't slept because I'm up all night bucklepping and twitching and 'moving' myself.
I just need to find the culprit so that I can ask GP to change it.
No blooming meds mention it. I'm guessing because people don't realise what's wrong actually.

I'm on venlafaxine and mirtazapine

Skidzer · 20/12/2019 08:03

I'm not on those. I've heard of mirtazpine. Is it an antidepressant? Haven't heard of the other one.

There has to be something in some meds that causes this. I just know.

OP posts:
MyGhastIsFlabbered · 20/12/2019 08:46

Yes they're both antidepressants. I've been on them so long I can't remember if I had this problem prior

Nat6999 · 20/12/2019 09:14

I have RLS, mine isn't caused by drugs, Fibromyalgia & ME are my main causes plus menopause. I used to be on pramipexol but had to stop due to side effects of gambling addiction. I now take dihydracodeine & supplement this with magnesium tablets & B vitamins. I also take Mirtazapine for depression, Omeprazole for reflux, Mirabegron for overactive bladder & Levothroxine for underactive thyroid. CBD is also great for RLS, I vape mine but you can get it in drops, capsules & edibles like gummies or powder to add to hot drinks.

VoyageInTheDark · 20/12/2019 11:59

I've had restless legs on and off since starting antidepressants many years ago. I'm currently on fluoxetine. The rls was really bad in pregnancy until I was prescribed iron for anaemia and it disappeared so I've continued taking iron and while I have the odd bad night it seems to help
