To want to boycott any film/series showing nudity after reading this

I never saw this series but was distressed to hear that the talented Ruth Wilson left the series "The Affair" after experiencing a toxic and coercive work environment.

Personally I don't think nudity really adds much to a story and talented directors can actually be more effective with other techniques. (eg the spilt red nail polish in CTM when the abortion scene was happening)

I feel this way about outlander. I really like it apart from all the shagging which doesn’t need to be so graphic. When Brianna was raped the direction was better as it cut away for most of the scene. You knew what was happening but didn’t see it.

Amelia Clark felt coerced into her nude scenes in GoT as her career wasn’t established she thought saying no could
damage it.

My closest friend has recently done something which required him to be completely nude, it didn’t bother him (not his first nude ‘job’) being nude, but he did request that he approves any nude scenes of him that feature in the final edit. A fine request which was granted, but surely that should be the norm rather than the exception.

Yes, early series of GOT were bad for this. Loads of TV is.

Similar with gratuitous sexual violence and murders with ‘thriller’ shows. I don’t watch them.

Dozer · 19/12/2019 17:29

In contrast Big Little Lies had none of this and sailed through the Bechdel Test.

CrissmussMockers · 19/12/2019 17:36

The final two series of GoT were clearly rowing back from the earlier attitude to hot and cold running prostitutes giggling as they left with a smacked bottom like this was Up Pompeii. Westeros must have been riddled with STDs.

And there seem to have been problems on both Star Trek Enterprise and The Orville Series 2s with dodgy drectors and suddenly departing female cast.

TV is traditionally low status in the US compared to UK, plenty of other hopefuls who can replace you if you won't get it all out either on or offscreen.

Westeros must have been riddled with STDs.

Of course it was. As was the Middle Ages.

I found this news really surprising. Watched the Affair but not the last series as I didn't see the point.

You would think someone of Ruth Wilson's standing could say No to another woman and have that woman respect it. Or any woman really standing or not.

Interestingly, I saw a video from The Hollywood Reporter were Maggie Gyllenhaal says that contractually she made sure she had the power of veto on all nude scenes.

Other actresses particularly Thandie Newton are visibly amazed, and say they will copy.

So not all nude scenes are coerced so there's no need not to watch any.

Shame on Showtime though, you'd think they'd respect "the talent" and women in general more, particularly post Weinstein.

SquareAsABlock · 19/12/2019 17:47

I knew Game of Thrones would instantly be mentioned. The amount of early sex and nudity is actually relevant to the plot, it shows how women are used and seen for one thing only. It's treating women in such a way that actually causes a lot of what happens later in the show plot wise, and visual representation shows that with far less use of nudity and sex. Having said that, there are a couple of instances of GoT which derive from the book and make extremely uncomfortable viewing, it does feel gratuitous.

Regardless of any tv/film plot, no woman (or man) filming should feel that any sex or nudity scene should cause them actual harm in any sense.

CrissmussMockers · 19/12/2019 18:06

Re Thandie Newton, the nudity in Westworld is very equal opportunities, absolutely relevant to the plot and more importantly the theme of machines becoming human and humans aspiring to become gods.

WriteronaMission · 19/12/2019 19:12

I knew Outlander and GoT would be mentioned. Both started with a lot but moved away from it as the female stars gained more of a voice, and willingness to say no. I hate that TV pressures them into it tbh.

Like a pp mentioned, I liked the way the show handled Brianna's rape in Outlander S4 but focusing on the boots and the people outside. Those who read the books new it had to happen but the producers found a non-gratuitous way of dealing with it. Mind you, Diana Gabaldon uses rape as a plot point or for drama rather than properly weaving it into the story. Yes the times were ripe for it but that doesn't mean it can't be added with care and duty into a story.

Rainbunny · 19/12/2019 19:56

I must admit I'm glad to finally get the real story about Wilson's departure from that show. There was some speculation and I'll admit to being mildly curious.

I have a like-dislike opinion of The Affair. I liked the first season enough to watch the second season which I didn't like and then I slogged my way through the third season basically hate-watching it and yet the final few seasons I've enjoyed watching but not sure why exactly. The acting is good - especially Maura Tierney and the characters are interesting because they're all fairly dislikable in different ways.

Anyway, if this is true then good for Ruth Wilson! Here we are, nearly in 2020 and female actors are still being pressured to titillate viewers with gratuitous nakedness, except now it's dressed up as 'equality' 'empowerment' and "you're not a 'cool-girl' actor if you don't."
