Greggs - cold pasties

Every time I go into Greggs it seems to be the same story: "sorry love, they've cooled down. Is that ok?"

What happened to the modern innovation of the hotplate? I can only assume it's to save running costs.

I work for greggs too and like the above poster has stated we’re not allowed to continuously cook pasties through out the day due to waste. We can’t predict when you’re going to come through the door and what pasty you want hot, you can always phone in and we’ll put one in ready for you or wait but that’s about it unfortunately

Baconrollandalattee · 19/12/2019 08:41

I work in Gregg's too and was coming on to say what @Daisydoot just said. The amount of times I have to say it's not a hot counter a day are insane. A lot of people think it is.

Rubyupbeat · 19/12/2019 08:56

I like greggs for their vegan sausage rolls, but never use them otherwise. Percy Ingles is the best by far, much more variety in breads and cakes.

easyandy101 · 19/12/2019 09:06

The one in London bridge is permanently rammed and the bakes are always super hot 😍

Tina96 · 19/12/2019 13:10

I work for greggs and it does anger me when people kick off over it.
As staff there isn't much we can do, the counters aren't hot counters and if they were, then as customers you'd be charged more on tax for a hot one. So unfortunately it's just pot of luck when you come in and of something has just come out.
We can't eat them up because our policy's say not to. So again there isn't much we can do, so I'd advise people if you do not like cold pasties, pop into Iceland and buy the greggs products from there and cook them at home.
P.S the 4 sausage rolls from Iceland work out cheaper there than the In store deal. Smile

Go in at lunch time. When they are busy. Then you are more likely to get a hot one as they are cooking so many.

I bloody love a greggs sausauge roll, even more so when hot so I try to pop in at lunchtime

managedmis · 19/12/2019 13:18

I thought greggs was cheap? Not these days eh

Is Oddies still going in Lancashire?

managedmis · 19/12/2019 13:20

Crikey daisy, maybe time to check out other job opportunities?

MintyMabel · 19/12/2019 13:24

There is a sweet spot for a steak bake. Too early and you need an asbestos tongue to eat it. Too late and it is congealed mush.

Hobbesmanc · 19/12/2019 13:47

Another moan about the veggie- they used to be the best pasty anywhere. Now they are like cheap frozen veg (think watery green beans and diced carrot) in a bland white sauce

Mumsy85 · 19/12/2019 14:12

To be fair you should know what you're in for going to Greggs in the first place they don't advertise "hot" food they advertise "freshly baked" 🙈

DonutMan · 20/12/2019 02:49

We can't eat them up because our policy's say not to.

I'm not sure I'd be a very good employee as I'd undoubtedly scoff a few.

I'm never rude about it. I think it's maybe because I used to live in London, so the high turnover of customers meant more frequent baking.

Festive bakes are epic though. I'll eat them cold anyday.

I've never been to Greggs as they don't have them down here but our local bakeries keep pastries on the hot plate all day but the cost is very high due to the pasty tax. A chicken slice would probably be around £1.5/£2 here and an actual pasty closer to £4. I would rather pay that than eat it cold though.

Disfordarkchocolate · 20/12/2019 04:12

I just ask what still got/warm and buy that if I like it. The cook all day so something is generally available.

nowaypose · 20/12/2019 04:24

I worked for them years ago as a student and it was the worst job I’ve ever had. Customers were ridiculously rude, I often got spoken down to as though I were a piece of shit they had just trodden in. I used to turn my back on some customers to make them a hot drink and mutter ‘I hope this burns you’ under my breath some days. Hideous job, I hated it and felt so relieved when I left. I still remember the bastard who used to come in every Sunday morning and ask for his sausages chopping in half. We weren’t allowed to wear gloves for H&S reasons so I had to burn my hands to chop his bastard sausages. I hated him.

It would make more sense for them to have heated counters but I think it’s the pasty tax, they’d have to charge more for continuously hot ones. To the PP who said they feel for hot ones with their bare hands, they’re supposed to use a paper bag. I agree with the sentiment though, I barely go in Greggs anymore because I feel so sorry for the staff who always look miserable (and I understand why) but when I do, it is usually cold and disappointing. Not good when it costs as much as it does, the prices have shot up in recent years.

Spamantha · 20/12/2019 04:26

I prefer cold or luke warm to hot Grin
