Christmas Gift

Not a very exciting thread but I'm last minute Christmas shopping and hoping for some advice. I usually spend about £10 on someone in my family, it's not a lot because I'm a student but I like to get them a wee something to open. I've seen a print of a place they love and have visited a fair bit so would be nice and a bit personal. I could afford to stretch to the mounted print but wouldn't be able to pay the extra to have it framed.

Wibu and look like a bit stingy to get them a print without a frame? I had a look for a cheap frame but it's an awkward size so it's either get it unframed or find something else. Would you appreciate a print without a frame as a gift if it was a place you had memories of? Thanks!

Not stingy at all. I think it’s a lovely gift. Plus of course they can then frame it in a colour scheme of their choice.

CastleCrasher · 18/12/2019 18:17

I'd actually prefer it unframed as I could then choose a frame that suited my decor.

SyntheticPumpkin · 18/12/2019 18:18

I would get them something else unless they could put the mounted print on display without a frame. I don’t think it’s great to get people gifts that they have to spend money on before they can “use” them, particularly as you say it’s an awkward size so frames are likely to be quite dear

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/12/2019 18:21

I'd rather it be unframed so I can choose a frame which matches the room it will be in.

It's perfect.

Nonnymum · 18/12/2019 18:21

Sounds like a lovely gift to me. They can get it framed themselves to suit their home

Drum2018 · 18/12/2019 18:23

I have bought a print unframed for a friend as I don't know which colour frame she'd prefer. Frames are relatively cheap so it won't cost them a lot to frame it and they may even have a frame to suit.

Motoko · 18/12/2019 18:23

Perfectly ok to give an unframed print.

For future reference, Ikea are good for frames, especially their Ribba frames, which come with a mount and are relatively inexpensive, but they also have a range of budget frames, and the cost for an A4 size picture is around £2. The postcard sized ones are only about 85p. The cheap ones don't come with mounts though.

RebeccaCloud9 · 18/12/2019 18:24

What about a frame from ikea? So cheap and great quality

IrnBruAndTwiglets · 18/12/2019 18:29

Thanks a million for your perspectives Smile. You've summed up my dilemma - on the one hand it means they can pick a frame they like and on the other I feel bad because I'm putting them in a position where they have to spend money. Argh! I just know it's lovely when someone gets me a thoughtful gift

I had a nosy at Ikea, most of my frames at home are ribba and they're fab! Unfortunately they don't have the right size

SyntheticPumpkin · 18/12/2019 18:34

What size would you need?

Papergirl1968 · 18/12/2019 18:37

Try the Range or Wilkinson’s for cheap frames. At least to see if they do the right size, even if you don’t buy it.
I think it sounds a lovely thoughtful gift.

NWQM · 18/12/2019 18:52

Could you compromise and get a stand? Obviously depends on the size of the print but at least they could use it whilst they thought about framing.

Something like the link below although this is a very cheap one and you can spend as much as you like:

P.s you can acknowledge it's a temporary thing is what I'm thinking.

FleetwoodMacMummy · 18/12/2019 18:57

I think it's fine without but have you checked eBay or Wilkinsons if you did want to get a n awkward size frame for cheap?

SnorkMaiden81 · 18/12/2019 18:59

I produce and sell art. A nicely mounted picture is perfectly lovely gift, especially considering your thought process behind the image.

It's enough. 😊

Spied · 18/12/2019 19:03

I'd prefer no frame.
I'd feel awkward changing it and I'd prefer to choose my own to go with my style/decor.(Cue- stress when you visited and I'd changed the frameGrin)

myself2020 · 18/12/2019 20:18

Unframed is much better! means they can get a frame that suits their taste and decor
