Any vets on here. I need help quickly. I may have overdosed my dog on Milbemax.

I have a labrador. I collected her worm tablets today and went to give them to her when she had her tea. For some reason I gave her all three of them instead of one. No idea why and when I realised what I had done she had eaten them all. Is this a problem? Should I be calling someone? Help me.

Call your vet - they will have an emergency contact number

I’m no vet, but the normal dose for my GSD is 2 large tablets once a month (she is about 30kgs), so I reckon your lab should be ok. Call your vet regardless to check.

bengalcat · 18/12/2019 18:08

Ring the vets . Likely not a problem .

LuckyKitty13 · 18/12/2019 18:10

I am a vet. Call the emergency vet, you may need to go in to have them make your dog vomit to stop the overdose, depending on size of dog/strength of tablets. Overdose can cause neurological side effects, but fatalities are rare.

littlecabbage · 18/12/2019 18:10

What does your dog weigh, and what size (mg) were the tablets?

Apolloanddaphne · 18/12/2019 18:11

I am on hold while they check with the vet. I panicked and forget that the vet would still be open.

Apolloanddaphne · 18/12/2019 18:11

They are checking possible side effects. She is about 28kg.

My BIl did this to his cat
It had to have a drip it was very poorly

FVFrog · 18/12/2019 18:18

Keeping fingers crossed for you @Apolloanddaphne, at least you’ve realised quickly. Do update and let us know how she is.

Apolloanddaphne · 18/12/2019 18:32

I am at the vet now. They are going to induce vomiting. I had a Choice to leave her and see how she went but tbh she has just had them and I would rather they were out quickly. Expensive error to make and I will never do it again.

Haggisfish · 18/12/2019 18:34

Oh ooor you and dog! At least vet still open.

littlecabbage · 18/12/2019 18:34

Up to 2 "large dog" tablets would be within the acceptable dose range, so hopefully 3 will not be too serious, but your vet ought to be able to ring the Veterinary Poisons Information Service to check whether 3 tablets would cause toxic effects.

littlecabbage · 18/12/2019 18:35

Ah, I see they are going to induce vomiting. All the best OP.

Apolloanddaphne · 18/12/2019 18:36

The vet tried to call and check or get advice but nowhere was open. He said two would be fine but three was overdose. I am such an idiot.

Floralnomad · 18/12/2019 18:38

I hope she’s ok OP at least you’ve got her to the vets quickly .

Apolloanddaphne · 18/12/2019 18:40

I am so glad I realised quickly and the vet was still open.

OP posts:
Throckmorton · 18/12/2019 19:12

Easily done - at least you spotted what you'd done! I hope your dog is fine once the vomiting is done with.

Lolwhat · 18/12/2019 19:18

Your dog should be fine now it’s with the vet in safe hands, she might feel a bit wobbly for a few days after all the vomiting but she’ll be fine, hope she feels better soon x

Apolloanddaphne · 18/12/2019 19:23

Thats us back home now. She vomited all three tablets back up so we know she will be fine in that respect. She seems lively enough after the drug they gave her but they said she might be sleepy. That was an unexpected £113 spend!

OP posts:
Dizzygirl00 · 18/12/2019 19:41

Glad she is ok 🐶

Laiste · 18/12/2019 19:42

£113 Ouch!

Glad she is ok. I picture you counting those tablets sooooooo over carefully next time OP Grin

Apolloanddaphne · 18/12/2019 19:49

We realised at the vet that she is usually given one big one and one small one to take each time but this time it was one big one for each time. I must have been so used to giving her more than one tablet that I didn't stop to think about it. I've got more tablets and we will start again at the weekend. I will check those tablets very carefully before I give her them!

Our son [25] gave one of our cats an overdose several years ago. He was talking to us on the phone [we were abroad] and sorting out the 3 different medications our dopey cat needed because he had hurt himself... Anyway, our son starting thinking aloud as to what amount of each medication he had given the cat...
Transpired said cat needed an emergency out-of-hours appointment because he had muddled the medications. And an overnight stay at the vets. Cost us more than £300!!! But cat is still here safe and sound. Bless!

pawsies · 18/12/2019 20:33

That's labs for you they don't even question what you're giving them. Straight down the hatch! 😂
