To feel my psychiatrist is wrong to be so concerned

I’m 10 pounds underweight and recently had a psychiatrist appointment. She noticed I was underweight and mentioned it. She’s also requested urgent bloods. Aibu to think that although I’m underweight my health isn’t a significant risk at the moment. I’m still physically well.

Hmm this sounds about lack of insight, which is something which is probably worrying them. Or denial

Devereux1 · 18/12/2019 16:35

OP, your reaction and failure to book the blood tests is another reason why the psychiatrist is right to be concerned.

Try to think of this rationally. If you were healthy, you wouldn't have problems eating, you'd be pleased a psychiatrist was doing their job properly, and pleased that blood tests have been ordered and you'd have more information with in the results.

Yet...

The physical effects of being underweight are invisible, until they're not. You may seem physically well to yourself, but it cannot be left until you begin physically unwell to yourself, because the long-term effects can't just be undone.

Prevention of malnutrition is much better than cure.

Greenglassteacup · 18/12/2019 16:40

What do you want?

MitziK · 18/12/2019 16:41

Look on it another way - if you are physically well and being underweight is nothing to be concerned about, getting the bloods done will show that.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/12/2019 16:45

OP you do realise that people are not going to give you an excuse or justification to avoid doing what your psychiatrist has asked. It would be utterly wrong and irresponsible of anyone to do so. A medical professional, who knows your condition and history has requested a blood test - so why are you struggling to book it?

Itsnotalwaysme · 18/12/2019 16:48

Honestly get the bloods done and stop wasting everyone's time. You have been told the next steps towards getting help and you're choosing not to do it, either get it done or remove yourself from their services!

Bluntness100 · 18/12/2019 16:50

Op, for your own sake you need to engage with thr phsychiatrist.

It seems being even a small bit underweight is really bad for you, much worse than a bit overweight, at least that what my doctr said years ago after putting me on the scales.

busyweeks78 · 18/12/2019 17:04

Thank you all replies. I’ve now booked the blood tests.

Several years ago I was suffering from very poor mental health and was about a stone underweight. My weight was noted as part of my initial assessment with the mental health team and my GP ordered bloods in order to check for malnutrition. All my bloods came back normal, I was physically well, and my mental health was addressed through medication and CAT therapy. My weight only increased when I was able to put into effect what I learnt through my therapy, which took several years.
I was, however, very unwell and knew it. I needed someone to step in with regard to self care to a degree and I remember feeling relieve at giving over my health to someone else. I was no longer just my responsibility - - someone else was going to try to fix what I had been unable to for so long.
Even if you are physically well is it not worth having the bloods done just to check that and to reinforce the idea of your self-worth? Do you not think you are not worthy of other people’s concern? Or is there another reason you don’t want the bloods?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/12/2019 17:11

I am glad to hear that.

Loss of appetite & weight loss can be down to depression, anemia & some cancers (& quite a few other illnessss) . My loss of appetite & weight loss was down to severe anaemia, my Aunts was due to bowel cancer. You really need to get a blood test so they can rule out a possible serious physical cause. Imagine its something physically serious, your delay could impact any recovery & longterm health or, your lifespan.

Hoppinggreen · 18/12/2019 17:34

A medical professional has told you that they think there is an issue but you want a loads of people on the internet who have never met you to say she is wrong
Won’t happen
