Removing old friend from social media

I've recently been through a social media "detox" and removed people I no longer speak to / unsure why they're on there in the first place.

I accidentally removed a friend of mine from a social media platform and upon texting them to tell them my mistake, they did not reply.

I haven't spoken to this friend really since I left to go on maternity a year ago. I've made attempts at texting to get in touch on a few occasions which haven't been responded to.

So, I decided to remove this person from all my social media platforms, not to be petty but purely because I don't seem to have a friendship with them anymore.

It is upsetting for me as this person was a good friend of mine and it does make me feel slightly anxious.

Am I being unreasonable?

I think you're overthinking it. Delete/don't delete, it's not that big of a deal.

ShirleyPhallus · 18/12/2019 11:57

I really don’t think anyone would care would they? Social media friendships seems like such a think a 14 year old would care about

But your two statements seem contradictory - did you remove this person by accident or because you didn’t consider them a friend any longer?

0nTheEdge · 18/12/2019 11:58

Are you sure they haven't changed their number or didn't get the txt?

Mrsjayy · 18/12/2019 12:01

Just re add them ? If they are annoyedat you then that is their problem not yours .

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 18/12/2019 12:02

I accidentally removed a friend of mine from a social media platform and upon texting them to tell them my mistake, they did not reply.

Why didn't you just re-add them, rather than the whole confession about it?

But either way, if they are not interested in maintaining the friendship, you will have to suck it up, as unpleasant as it sounds. I got friend-dumped by text once, with no reason, so I know it hurts. But you don't want to have friends by gunpoint, so...

CrazyOldBagLady · 18/12/2019 12:04

I don't think you detoxed enough if you are placing so much importance into this, in all honesty.

NoSauce · 18/12/2019 12:05

It’s a bit sulky to remove them completely just because they didn’t get back to you.

Honeybee85 · 18/12/2019 12:05

Just unfollow them and don’t post anything too personal that is not intended to see/know for people you’re not that close with.
That’s how I handle my social media accounts.

It looks a bit odd to suddenly delete people from your accounts without any obvious reason IMO.

keepingbees · 18/12/2019 12:14

I agree you're overthinking it.
I've been unfriended by loads of people including old friends who I had kept in touch with. I just think fine whatever and move on.

nowaypose · 18/12/2019 12:17

Bit melodramatic to remove them from everything because they didn’t reply. This is all very teenager, if you don’t want them on there then fine.

Drum2018 · 18/12/2019 12:21

It is upsetting for me as this person was a good friend of mine and it does make me feel slightly anxious.

'Was' being the operative word. If you haven't spoken to them in a year then you are no longer good friends. Bit ott to delete from all social media but at the same time there's no point having them as 'friends' on SM when they don't engage with you anymore.

CakeandCustard28 · 18/12/2019 12:34

Maybe just get rid of social media if it’s making you anxious. You’re over thinking it way to much and acting like a teenager does over social media if I’m honest.

Mulledwineinajug · 18/12/2019 12:56

Only on Mumsnet do people not care about being deleted on social media by actual friends

WorraLiberty · 18/12/2019 12:58

If you haven't spoken to her for a year, I agree with PPs who say you're putting too much importance on this.

sonjadog · 18/12/2019 12:59

I think it was a major overreaction to a friend not answering a text to remove her from all social media. Why didn’t you just add her again when you found out you did it by mistake?

SinglePringle · 18/12/2019 13:01

I wouldn’t have a clue if someone removed me on SM. I occasionally think ‘oh, I’ve not seen so and so on here for a while’ and just assume they haven’t posted.

If they’ve removed me, so be it. I just assume they want to whittle down their friends list or I’ve irritated them in some way but I don’t take it personally.
