To think the MAP won’t help?

MayDayHelp · 17/12/2019 23:31

I had an incident with a split condom earlier today and initially thought I’d just get the MAP. However I’ve just checked my cycle app and today is my ovulation day 😱.

From what I’ve read online, the MAP pill won’t work if ovulation has already happened or is about to happen. It said something about getting a copper coil but there’s no chance of that as there’s nowhere anywhere nearby that fits coils, and the places further away always have massive waiting lists (I know from previous experience when I wanted a coil fitted).

Help! What are my options?

Talk to a pharmacist. There should be one that is open all night if you're so worried you can't wait. Flowers

BuffaloCauliflower · 17/12/2019 23:34

Which cycle app are you using? They’re not generally 100% for ovulation - I’ve been using natural cycles nearly 2 years and have a very regular cycle, my predicted ovulation date can still be a couple of days out. It’s still worth trying the MAP, you may not have ovulated yet

sciencegirl91 · 17/12/2019 23:36

Don’t do nothing! A few things:

  • your cycle app isn’t necessarily 100% accurate, especially if just based on last periods not temperature. You might not have ovulated yet, in which case the MAP has a good chance of working. Take it ASAP tomorrow.
  • if you need the coil as emergency contraception, places will see as an emergency. They should call the places you know fit them and tell them you’ve had unprotected sex. They should be able to see you within the timeframe (which I believe is five days).

Hand hold and good luck, but please don’t do nothing!

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 17/12/2019 23:37

It might be they would fast track you for a coil in your circumstances rather than a woman seeking one for normal contraception. I would book an emergency GP appointment.

MayDayHelp · 17/12/2019 23:38

Thanks, it’s the Fitbit app that I use and it’s based on my periods not temperature. I’m on day 13 of a 26 day cycle.

Will go to a pharmacy first thing in the morning.

Definitely get the MAP. If you’ve already ovulated, that’s probably a good thing as the egg is only viable for about 12 hours and it takes sperm a long time to reach it. Most people who are ttc plan sex for the days before ovulation.

If ovulation hasn’t happened yet, you can still delay it with MAP.

If you do decide to go for a coil, you’ll need to call your local GUM/family planning/sexual health clinic. The GP won’t do it, as far as I know. Many have some same day walk in appointments.

theworstwife · 17/12/2019 23:52

If you need a coil as emergency contraception your local GU clinic will fit you in - call them in the morning. It can be fitted up to 5 days after your expected date of ovulation and MAP is normally given as well

basicbitch16 · 17/12/2019 23:57

From my research (& personal experience!), MAP is useless if taken on or after ovulation but if you aren't certain, it's gotta be worth a go?

I imagine a pharmacist can advise of your best options. Good luck OP x

MayDayHelp · 18/12/2019 00:04

Oh god...looks like I’m going to have to try and sort a coil out then :/

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/12/2019 00:11

WOrd to the wise...... when I had this issue, it turned out that even for emergency contraception they couldnt fit it the same day as the doctor was fully booked.

This was at the FPC, my GP told me that the "coil nurse" was fully booked for three week Hmm

Savingshoes · 18/12/2019 00:28

Ring 111.
Give them your dates etc and the clinician who rings you back will sort out the contact details you need.
Might even arrange the emergency apt for you.

MayDayHelp · 18/12/2019 00:33

I just phoned 111 and they were about as much use as a chocolate teapot. Apparently they are only allowed to use information from the nhs choices website, so me reading what I’d read to them about the MAP not being effective on the nhs.uk website apparently wasn’t a ‘reputable source’ Hmm.

They had no advice whatsoever other than to phone my GP in the morning.

Sorry they were unhelpful OP, I hope you manage to get through to you GP this morning and get some good advice! The safest option would be to take the MAP but also arrange for a coil. Take care x

memberofseven · 18/12/2019 08:37

I've got preggers twice after taking the map so I think you are probably right.

MayDayHelp · 18/12/2019 08:55

Thanks, have got a phone appointment with a GP this morning.

Aargh thought I’d give my nearest walk in sexual health clinic a call too and spoke to a nurse practitioner - she said she hadn’t heard that the MAP wouldn’t be effective if Someone has already ovulated, and their guidelines were just to prescribe it as long as it was within 72 hours Confused.

OP posts:
sciencegirl91 · 18/12/2019 09:31

The thing is that no one can be sure whether or not someone (you) has ovulated so they’ll always err on the side of caution and say take the MAP anyway. Is there anything in particular that makes you reluctant to take it? The cost? Can you get to a clinic which will prescribe it free? The sooner you take it the better really, let’s say you’re due to ovulate this evening rather than yesterday, taking the MAP today would prevent that happening

dietcokemum · 18/12/2019 09:32

Ulipristal is more effective if you have ovulated. hope you are sorted by now.

Bohoboo · 18/12/2019 09:34

Yes I got pregnant after taking map following pretty much your situation. Wish you all the best with finding a solution

MayDayHelp · 18/12/2019 10:18

I spoke to a pharmacist this morning and he confirmed there was no point in taking the MAP :(

Waiting for a call back from the GP to ask about a coil but I’m pretty sure they don’t fit them there. I phoned my county’s sexual health services helpline and they are only running one sit and wait clinic and it’s 40 miles away :(

OP posts:
MayDayHelp · 18/12/2019 10:32

GP phoned and he said it was nonsense that the MAP wouldn’t work if I had ovulated, so has prescribed me Ella one.

Now I’m really confused!

OP posts:
PepePig · 18/12/2019 11:16

Take the MAP today, anyway. You might as well double up and hopefully one of the method works.

SteeperThanHell · 18/12/2019 11:45

Your GP is wrong.

Standard advice is:
EC providers should advise women that the available evidence suggests that oral EC administered after ovulation is ineffective.

From the FRSH:
www.fsrh.org/standards-and-guidance/documents/ceu-clinical-guidance-emergency-contraception-march-2017/

MayDayHelp · 18/12/2019 11:57

I did suggest to him he was wrong but he got all huffy and told me he’d been a GP for 38 years so he knows what he’s talking about. But because it’s case closed as far as he’s concerned he won’t help with a coil so I’m going to have to take the pill and hope for the best :/

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 18/12/2019 12:06

How bad would a pregnancy be right now?

I think I'd be making the trek for the coil, although it's horrendous that it's so far away from you Flowers
