I’m sorry, but why should an individual who has gone to say Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, Yale etc not let that be to their advantage in seeking a job?

They will have worked damn hard to get there. Quite frankly they’ll have worked damn harder for their qualifications than some other people at other universities ee UEL.

It’s a competitive job market, so why shouldn’t they get an advantage?

I work in big pharma and am about to hire three senior managers for a team I’m about to set up. I couldn’t give a crap what university you went to I want to know if you’ve got what it takes to do the job. So I’ll be looking at what similar work you’ve done elsewhere and evaluating the key skills which you will absolutely need to be able to do the job.

they often have a lower work ethic

Sorry but this is very silly. You have to get ridiculously high grades to get into Oxbridge in the first place no matter where you come from and no number of fancy tutors or schools can make you get those grades. The vast majority of people worked to get into Oxbridge. Sure, there are obvious advantages that some have, but a very tiny number of people get A*AA without doing any workHmm

Sorry, but work ethic is sometimes missing, they may be great at their subject, but try getting someone to work on something they decide is beneath them or something that they don't want to do because it's entry level work or just s9mething that needs to be done and there is often an arrogance. Not always, some are great, but certainly I would not take attended Cambridge as evidence of strong work ethic. Can be tedious

Sparklesocks · 18/12/2019 17:34

Well if they’re smart and hardworking surely getting jobs shouldn’t be a problem?

VentiSkinnyLatte · 18/12/2019 17:43

It’s an attempt to overcome conscious & unconscious bias recruit diverse candidates
MC firms use it, it’s been on go for a while.
If you’re a strong appointable candidate that’ll come through irrespective of where you trained

OMG!

By the same token some employers only take students from certain schools or universities. Why is that fair?

An Oxbridge education shouldn't be a ticket for life but sadly that's often the case.

Poor you having to go through a recruitment process like everyone else.

AufderAutobahn · 18/12/2019 18:47

Having a first class honours degree from Oxbridge does not automatically mean you'll excel at any job. Two of the most talented and highest achieving people in the same industry as me didn't go to university at all, even though the vast majority of those who do work in it are graduates. If employers always gave preferential treatment to academic high achievers they would miss out on a lot of talent. Yes, YABU.
