Custard (lowest stakes AIBU ever?)

I've just made meringue for a Christmas pavlova (no I know, it's not very Christmassy, but we asked the kids what they wanted three years ago when they were 4 and it's sort of become a tradition) and I have 4 egg yolks left. WIBU to make some custard from them and have some panettone and custard this evening, even though it's not remotely Christmas yet and there's a tsunami of pudding coming at me from about Saturday onwards?

@justilou1 yeah the kids aren't getting a look in on this one Grin

Point taken! This is obviously one for the sugar addicts! I'll take my cheesy protein fest over to the dark side.

Sneezeandooops · 17/12/2019 13:26

Oooh homemade custard, yes it would be wrong to waste the egg yolks. Crack on and enjoy the custard!

Popetthetreehugger · 17/12/2019 13:56

I haven't made a pavlova for years ... and Iv never ever made curd ... I'm thinking something with hazel nuts and gold Leaf ..... my DGS has just nodded off , that's my next hour sorted ... wonder who's name will pop up when I google 🤓?

I'm making a pavlova for Christmas too, but was going to make the meringue on Christmas Eve. Is this not necessary? Can I do it sooner?? What a revelation!

I was also having the egg yolk/custard debate. Are you me, in another dimension??

Cor there are some strange people here.

Enjoy your custard and panettone. We’ve just had some panettone smothered in butter on the sofa- pretty much where we have been all day.

So I had to come on and update... I made the custard, but it was rank!

I used this recipe - it has three tablespoons of cornflour in it. I thought, that isn't custard, it's custard flavoured polenta. And I was right! Next time I will stick with the Jamie Oliver recipe that uses like a pint and a half of cream.

I still ate it though Grin

"Proper" custard is just wrong with cornflour in.

I'll happily eat Bird's any custard but it's not the same thing.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 17/12/2019 16:14

Homemade lemon curd is the nuts. Just sayin' for next time Grin

PloddingPandaMum · 17/12/2019 16:17

Better than wasting them! Omlettes without egg whites aren't terribly nice if memory serves. Defo go sweet not savoury. Grin

wonkylegs · 17/12/2019 16:23

Mmm panettone and custard.... my Christmas tradition pudding is panettone bread and butter pudding and it's to die for and I make sure we buy extra panettone so we have some spare for this. I love the smell of making custard from scratch it's gorgeous.

tillytrotter1 · 18/12/2019 08:14

Where are you? I'm making Key lime pie and need yolks!! Something a bit sharp to cut the rich stuff. Nigella's cappuccino meringue is lush.

TooManyPaws · 18/12/2019 08:18

I make custard from scratch when I'm making my stollen bread "and butter" pudding. It seems popular.

Make a bread and butter pudding using the panettone.
