WIBU? Landlady..

Try & keep this brief. I’m a single mum with 2 under 3. Private rent 2 bed flat, the place is by no means great, very old kitchen/bathroom. The council helped me source it when I was pregnancy with DC2. I’ve done what I can in terms of decorating, up keep etc.

My landlady does not like to spend money, for example I had a pretty bad leak in the kitchen which had been going on when previous tenants were here. By the time it got fixed the cupboard under the sink was water damaged & smelt. Instead of replacing the very old, pretty dirty kitchen unit the landlady replaced the piece of wood at the bottom. Laminate flooring coming up gets sealed & looks crap.

Basically everything is done on the tightest budget & it doesn’t matter what it looks like as long as it functions in her eyes.

I have just seen a flat in my block on rightmove, much newer kitchen & bathroom, more modern,
Clean, for £150 less per month than I am paying.

So my WIBU is, WIBU to send my landlady the link to the property & ask her to consider modernising the place?

She has more than just this property to rent so I don’t think she’s cash strapped & of course I could move but I do like the area & my neighbours.

Feel like I’ve been mugged off totally paying way to much for what it is tbh. WWYD?

What good is a six month break clause anyway? The other flat is being advertised now, they won’t wait for 2 months plus. I don’t think your LL will modernise OP, it has been rented without all the work, so why would she? That is shit for you though.

The other flat owners might wait two months, it's a quiet time for moving anyway. It can't hurt to check.

RhymingRabbit3 · 17/12/2019 02:38

There's no way she will do that. Why would she? Shes getting a good rent from you which you're obligated to pay for another 8 months so there is absolutely no benefit to her in spending money on the flat now.

Most tenancies have a 2 month break clause: does yours?

Ah I have one of these landlords too.

He’s a millionaire (farming/property/car auctions). One of the taps on the bath broke. He didn’t want to pay the £6 for the cheapest set of taps in B&Q. So took a tap off an old bath tub he had in a barn and fitted that instead. So now I have two mismatched old shitty taps.

All for the grand price of £1015 a month!

TBH I would move, especially if it had a garden, Are you able to get out of your present contract without penalty. The physical move is just an inconvenience, and would be well worth it.

TwattingDog · 17/12/2019 08:40

How hard would it be to break the contract? It would be worth it!

Pay 2 people to do the heavy lifting. Also worth it.

Omg! Some landlords are so tight! I don't know if the comment about the £6 tap is infuriating, funny or sad 😳

Check your 6 month break clause if you can put a deposit down on the other place they may agree to wait, often new places are advertised with people handing their notice in on old places in mind.
Some landlords/lady can't afford to just refurbish the place. And really you either put up or move. If there's any danger to yourself you can report this though.
