This is where the media try to get us all angry at each other so we forget about the millionaires/billionaires who got that way by not paying tax and taking bonuses from companies who pay no tax.

Pumpkinpie789 · 16/12/2019 22:56

Child benefit isn’t means tested but if you or your partner earns 60K+ p/a then you end up paying it all back as a tax penalty. HOWEVER you should always claim for it even if that is the case but elect not to receive any money as it counts towards your NI contributions for state pension.

Peasplease21 · 16/12/2019 23:00

@slashlover preach!

gamerchick · 16/12/2019 23:02

Tax credits go on the year before though don't they? So come Aprils renewal he's likely going to get an overpayment demand dating back to his win. Child benefit is means tested though now so not sure how that's working unless it's salary means tested. DLA isn't means tested and nor should it be.

It's just a frothy article designed to wind people up.

ActualHornist · 16/12/2019 23:03

Funnily enough a lot of us are not only aware of the loopholes that are found for rich people, but are able to be cross about more than one thing at a time!

No he isn't earning, but don't really understand how I'm supposed to be A-OK with this morally wrong behaviour because it's the fault of the DWP or because other rich people get away with much more?

Don't get me wrong, totally know this is the papers purposely written to get a rise out of people. But y'know, they didn't need to have an interview with the papers, did they?

Gilead · 16/12/2019 23:16

I’m more angry that the paper called the benefits‘handouts’.

x2boys · 16/12/2019 23:25

David, Cameron,s Son was profoundly disabled and he was quite rightly entitled to DLA as it's non means tested .

TheGardenFairy · 17/12/2019 10:16

Everyone gets outraged when pensioners get something for free but it seems a couple with children should be able to claim benefits even when they have a bank full of money.

The benefits system needs a good overhaul.

The benefits system needs a good overhaul.

Going from the steady stream of complaints on MN, the fairest thing to do for all, is to completely scrap the benefits system. That way hard working taxpayers can sleep soundly at night knowing that not a single penny of their taxes is in danger of going to anyone they don't approve of.

No idea how we'd go about it though. In fact I can't even think what the first step would be.

The workhouse being brought back probably.

YouJustDoYou · 17/12/2019 10:32

I just love how people can bleat on about the legal "loopholes" "wealthy" people can use for their money and yet when it's someone on benefits He's not done anything wrong. I don't get the outrage. Oh, the hypocrisy

Hopefully the govt will sort out those who need a hand up and those who can pay their own way.

Not everyone who works full time have a never-ending pot of money. Those with £4m in the bank do not need hand outs.
