My GP called me 'hysterical' over this

I've been to my GP three times over the course of about 6 weeks.

What's happening is I'm getting these sores in my head (I stumble upon them when I'm doing my hair etc), but they're making me lose my hair.

It started off as a few small patches and now I have loads all over my head. The biggest area of baldness is about the size of a £2 coin.

The first time GP said eczema (I've never had that in my life, always had very soft skin etc). He gave me a cream. I returned two weeks later as I was losing more and more hair. He tried another cream in a huff and said I need to wait 6/8 weeks for it to work.

I went back today quite upset as I'm losing more and more patches and he told me "You are being hysterical. It's just eczema. And there's nothing you can do to treat hair loss anyway so it is what it is".

I couldn't quite believe what I was hearing. This is a GP who was brilliant at getting my DH sorted for an emergency hospital appointment that he needed.

I was not 'hysterical', just feeling upset and explained as much.

I'm really started to feel a bit depressed about it. I'm losing hair and if feels like it isn't being taken seriously Sad

AIBU to say I'm not hysterical?

Deeply offensive language. Hair loss is incredibly upsetting.
Hope you get sorted soon.💐

FuckYouBoris · 16/12/2019 19:14

YANBU op that's really stressful.

WorldEndingFire · 16/12/2019 19:14

Get a second opinion. My cousin was fobbed off for years with eczema that was actually psoriasis - years of misery could have been saved.

avocadochocolate · 16/12/2019 19:15

I changed to a new GP surgery over something like this. I was very upset with what GP said to me. New GP has been brilliant. It is easy to change.

All I can say by way of explanation is that GPs have ridiculous amounts of stress and see the same trivial issues day after day. I used to see one who was brilliant when DD has her first asthma attack but was rude when it came the usual round of coughs and sore throats.

FatBlobbyBob · 16/12/2019 19:18

YANBU & I would see someone else.

helacells · 16/12/2019 19:20

Looks like psoriasis. You need a prescription for scalp oil. Your doctor is a dick

Evilmorty · 16/12/2019 19:21

I promise you this isn’t ringworm, there is no definite ring.

It does look like either eczema or sebhorric dermatitis which I have and that does make your hair fall out. You can get several treatments online for less than a prescription cost. Nizoral is currently working for me and it’s growing back. Alternatively vosene (although that is quite weak so could be a regular shampoo after intensive treatment), T Gel, coal tar shampoo like Polyzar. It grows back once it’s treated.

Lay off sugar, dairy and try not to stress and it will go.

moonsandstars · 16/12/2019 19:22

I'm sorry I don't have any helpful recommendations just wanted to say YANBU and I too would be upset about this and would affect my confidence, I would see another gp, a female may have more sympathy in regards to this. I hope you get to the bottom of it.

Interestedwoman · 16/12/2019 19:22

He shouldn'tve called you 'hysterical,' -I would complain about that. Anyone would be upset. As the hair loss is due to sores I don't think it'll be permanent. xx Are you managing to avoid picking at it?

I would definitely see a different GP next time you go.

Best wishes xxxxx

Evilmorty · 16/12/2019 19:23

The lion stuff he’s given you is a low % steroid which will clear it if it’s ezcema. You should feel that work within about 2 days.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 16/12/2019 19:24

What a fuckin outrage. Bloody patriarchy. Hope your head gets sorted. Xxx

CarolinaPink · 16/12/2019 19:25

If my GP called my hysterical about anything I'd be making a complaint to the practice manager Confused

CarolinaPink · 16/12/2019 19:26

Also, he/she should be referring you to a dermatologist.

Memoriesmemories · 16/12/2019 19:27

Poor you OP that looks sore and of course you've every right to be upset! See another GP!

Lorraine265 · 16/12/2019 19:29

It’s looks like tinea capitas ( a type of ring worm). My kids have had it repeatedly unfortunately. You need a swab to confirm though. Use nizoral shampoo in the meantime though.

Evilmorty · 16/12/2019 19:30

They don’t refer for ezcema unless it’s becoming regularly infected or peeling. They’d get hundreds of thousands of referrals when OP could just take the advice and let it work. The language he used isn’t great but for many it’s a lifelong low level condition which they manage at home with creams and shampoos, and won’t go away immediately. A dermatologist would say the same.

TroysMammy · 16/12/2019 19:34

Did he arrange blood tests? I've seen patient's blood forms to investigate hair loss.

woodchuck99 · 16/12/2019 19:38

I'm not sure that eczema especially considering you haven't had it before. It could be an infection and if so you wanted to be treated as soon as possible rather than being fobbed off. If you can afford it I would bypass your GP and phone your local private hospital and ask for an appointment with a dermatologist.

Fretfulparent · 16/12/2019 19:40

Have you got any thick dandruff type flakes? If so it could be seborrheoriac dermatitis. Try nizoral/ketoconazole shampoo. Buy it over the counter. Apply to lesions and leave on for at least 5 minutes before rubbing it into a lather

Evilmorty · 16/12/2019 19:47

woodchuck99 Ezcema can appear on anyone at times of stress or cold or eating badly or because of a mild reaction to something or just aging.

Ruby666 · 16/12/2019 19:52

I get flairs of this all the time, never really bothered to go to the gp as it seems to be related to stress, I found that washing my hair regularly with a medicated shampoo helps, my OH gets something similar and apparently it’s psoriasis.

beanaseireann · 16/12/2019 19:53

So many different opinions on what it could be OP, ranging from serious to not so serious.
You best see another GP to be sure.
Best of Luck.
I hooe it gets cleared up for you as it looks very sore.
I have scalp Psoriosis and mine doesn't look like that.

powershowerforanhour · 16/12/2019 19:53

We weren't there so don't know if you were hysterical or not

I wasn't there, and I'm not a doctor, but I think we can confidently rule out a wandering uterus from the list of potential aetiologies.

Doggodogington · 16/12/2019 19:54

Get a second opinion. When I was 16 I’d gone through months of tonsillitis when the doctor just said there’s nothing more we can do. Next day I saw a doctor up the hospital (they had an oral awareness day) and within hours I was admitted and put on a drip. See a different doctor, maybe yours is focusing on eczema because of his derma background where as another doctor may see something different.

Ihavethefinalsleigh · 16/12/2019 19:55

Complain to the practice manager, change to a different practice and insist on a Dermatology referral. If you can afford it, go privately as you'll be seen almost immediately.

Ignore the amateur doctors on here. It's disgraceful how many people are offering a diagnosis.
