I want a car that looks good, for cheap (eg fiat Tipo)

So I don't know if this exists.

DP is looking at buying a car, but he drives 60+ motorway miles a day, so doesn't want to spend silly money, when the mileage will be through the roof in a few years. At the same time needs something 'family' sized, that is sturdy and looks quite nice.

We have found the fiat Tipo a great option, looking at under £6k to buy a 2017 model with 30k miles on, and it's a good looking car.
But DP's sibling has recently bought one, and it's putting him off, so wants to shop around first.

Is there anything else similar that anyone knows of that we could look into?
I've also heard Dacia models are cheap, but we don't love the way that they look.
Do any more cheap/good looking cars exist, or should we give up and go for the Tipo?

Thanks

Kia Stonic Smile

Kia C'eed is a good choice (particularly with the 7 year warranty). My wife recently bought a DS3 which is stylish (if that's a key factor).

Ford Fiesta Ecoboost. Great car!

Never buy a fiat if you want reliability. It's fine if you are single, but with a family you definitely want something reliable. I currently own a Fiat 500x which suddenly stopped due to a gearbox transmission error while driving on the North Circular. Refused to turn on. Fiat recovery took 4 hours to get a recovery to me... I had to be in a freezing car all evening until then. It's exactly 3 years old, driven 21000 miles. This is the 4th time the same fault is happening and now Fiat have pulled out a small print saying that the car is no longer under manufacturer's warranty because of an administrative error on their side, so they want me to pay £1400 for it. We bought a brand new car for the sake of reliability and still struggling. I'll let you decide if you want to take on this sort of hassle just for the looks....

Fiats are not desirable cars, so perhaps look for something more reliable.

As above, Kia offers good value and a long warranty. Not as ugly as Dacias.

I recently got a Peugeout 208, 12,000 miles on the clock, 2015 plate for just under £5k. It's the perfect car for me and I'd highly recommend having a look at them. It's Road Tax exempt and gets 65mpg. Had it for 3 weeks, drove it the 40 miles home, have driven to work and back 4 times a week (20 miles a day in heavy traffic) and I've still got a quarter of a tank of petrol.

Have a look at Skoda. They have some really good looking cars that are reliable and not too expensive.

bridgetreilly · 17/12/2019 13:49

I was just going to say Skoda too.

flirtygirl · 17/12/2019 13:53

Op look at kia, hyundai or Ford fiesta/ bmax etc are all better than a Fiat tipo. 6k should buy a decent low mileage car 2 or 3 years old.

Vauxhall insignia

Mercedes E270 CDI, the old W211 facelift model from 2007-2009.

You'll find examples of around 75,000 miles for £3000. But there's a reason they were used as taxis for so long, they go on and on and are solidly built. Put aside a couple of grand for any big bills and servicing costs. That would be my silly leftfield choice.

No glamour or street cred involved but Nissan Micra is a super reliable car and sturdy. They slog on for years and years and have easily obtained and cheap replacement parts.

bridgetreilly · 17/12/2019 15:26

Nissan Micra is not precisely 'family sized' though.

BreasticlesNotTesticles · 17/12/2019 15:30

I bought an 8 year old A3 for £6k and it's now 12 years old and as solid as a tank. Cheap to run and so far no major expenses.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 17/12/2019 15:48

I've got a 2011 5 door Micra acenta and it's really generously sized.

My DH bought a Tipo because he wanted something that looked a bit like a golf but was cheaper.
It was in the garage so often that the mechanics offered to get him his own mug.

Jamieson90 · 17/12/2019 16:06

Stay away from FORD and FIAT, those in the industry joke they stand for found on a rubbish dump and fix it again tomorrow.

Doodlebug5 · 17/12/2019 16:44

I had a Renault captur. That was nice and comfy to drive and very economical. I now have a 1 series... again v nice to drive and economical

ChristmasSpiritsOnThRocksPleas · 17/12/2019 16:47

If you’re doing motorway regular journeys I would recommend prioritising safety and reliability over looks.

Stefoscope · 17/12/2019 16:51

Hyundai i20 (or i30 if you need something bigger). When I bought mine a couple of years back they rated highly for safety and fuel economy. I think they look quite smart for the price and you could get a fairly new low mileage one for around the £6k mark.
