AIBU to ask teachers what they love getting for Christmas

DD is in reception year and I don’t know what the done thing is re teachers gifts at Christmas. I assume all the kids give a gift? I think it’s a lovely idea but am struggling to know what to get, would a bottle of booze such as Prosecco or baileys be appropriate?? Then again I don’t even know if she drinks, so any recommendations would be hugely appreciated.

A heartfelt message in a card.

That is all.

Please do not feel pressured to spend, especially if you don't know what she likes.

A bottle of wine would be lovely but some of the best things I’ve ever had are letters (not cards) where the parent has written a really nice thank you message-I still have some from 1999!

Cards take up room (imagine keeping even just 5 per class for 29 years), but letters are tiny.

Thank you both, and enjoy your well deserved Xmas break!

I agree, card with proper message. No present thanks.

I don’t think it really matters what the gift is, it’s more about the gesture and teaching your child that it’s nice to say thank you and give a gift. Ask your child if there’s anything little they’d like to give, like a pen or something. Even if it’s just a bar of chocolate Or a special picture/letter, you’ve created that moment where the child proudly goes up to the teacher to give their gift and then they receive a sincere thanks from the teacher. That’s all that matters.

A card with a nice message, and perhaps an email to the head teacher.

Please don't feel like you have to buy a gift. No teacher will ever be ungrateful for one, but there's only so much space in their house for mugs, candles, and nick-nacks.

If you really want to send a gift into school, supplies always go down well. Blu-tak, post-its, good quality pens, sellotape, teabags, biscuits...

I left teaching before gift giving was a thing, but I still keep cards I received from ex-pupils, some of them 30 years ago.

I usually get amazon gift cards for my kids teachers, or costa vouchers

But yes, I do try to write a personal message of thanks to them.

Lovely card. I’m a secondary teacher and get very few but I’ve kept every single one of them.
