To think genetically modified food will now be allowed in our supermarkets?

One of my biggest fears about the Tory victory and the ability to now 'strike a massive trade deal' that Trump tweeted about just after the 10pm exit poll, is that the European ban on GM foods obviously won't apply in the UK anymore.

Friends and relatives of mine who recently returned from living in the US have said that, unless you can afford to shop in Whole Foods (and who can), the quality and nutritional value of what is all GM fruit and vegetables is incredibly poor and that it's contributed massively to the obesity crisis, as people end up having to eat three times as much to make up for what it lacks in taste or nutrition.

Would it be made clear to consumers if supermarkets started selling GM food - would they have to be labelled as such? Or would we just not be told and find out a couple of years down the line that almost everything is now GM and there was nothing we could do about it?

I am not asking about the techniques involved- I have a background in DNA technology- I am asking about the risks it brings to us

Perhaps a background in reading would help too ? Why did you ask me a question about the risks of GM food (or otherwise) when I haven't actually expressed any opinion on the subject ? Obviously it's a non-zero number, because everything has a risk. But whether that's any different to non-GM food ...

The bigger issue with GM is over who owns the technology and therefore who has significant control of the food chain. 87% of the global surface of GM crops is controlled by the agri-tech giant Monsanto, either directly through the sale of seeds or indirectly through the licence of traits for which they own the patents. Meanwhile, big biotech companies have been buying up the global seed trade over the last 20 years; the top three (Monsanto, Dupont and Syngenta) own a staggering 47%. Some people are uneasy with a global food supply being controlled by the same people who brought us DDT, Agent Orange and PCB. In addition to this, with the loss of smaller seed companies goes local varieties suited to local conditions and requirements.

Monsanto have been involved in several lawsuits regarding their agricultural practices, pesticides etc. which have several times been linked to health risks.

Also there haven't been that many studies which have been carried out to study the affect of GMO's on the human DNA or genes. GMOs are ofcourse already sold in this country, if you choose to buy organically, like me you are avoiding this!

We should always have a choice about what we put into our bodies! And should be fully aware of what it is we're putting into our bodies which quite simply means that packaging and labelling should include whether something contains GMO's!

Anyone who cares about their consumer rights and human rights should want descriptive packaging. I don't want consume GMO's anymore than I would chlorinated meat. Should chlorinated meat also not be correctly labelled so we unknowingly buy it and consume it?

You seriously need a tin foil hat

@Rainbowhairdontcare
Is that aimed at me?

Wasn't there some research which found traces of GM alleles in wild crops ?

XmasRibbons · 18/12/2019 12:46

@SerendipityJane I think I have read that before, but also it's the same with pesticides which can contaminate organic agriculture, it's very difficult to stop this.

Personally I think buying organically is simply the better of the options, it's not something I wholeheartedly trust. But there are ofcourse more regulations in place, I am also careful of where I source most of my produce.

No, it was aimed at the OP
