My house is a mess. Cluttered. Too much stuff

I’ve been desperately de cluttering and had a cleaner but I haven’t had enough time and the cleaner although a lovely person is slow and ineffective and just unfortunately isn’t doing a very good job even the front room which is the only tidy room she leave it in thick dust ??

So I stressed and crying as need it tidy. Dh has increased his work hours and I’m tired. Hard to get anything done with toddler around so I’m considering getting my him bags and just throwing away everything unless it is something hugely important as I can’t cope and am any sit there sorting bags for charity shop etc
It’s just a total mess and it’s actually making me ill I know I could sit ds in front of CBeebies and get it done

Ask yourself - "Does this (widget) bring mne joy? If yes - keep

If no then charity shop/tip / bin

TheGirlWithGlassFeet · 16/12/2019 11:56

Can you hire a skip? If it general household items they will then sort it into recycling.

Flowers it’s horrible feeling like you do. Do what is going to make you happy/comfortable, I often have a pre-Christmas throw out especially when DD was little and I knew more crap would be coming in the house from my well meaning DM.

Funnily enough I’ve just done the exact same thing in our dining room. So much crap just gets lobbed in there by all of us. So I’ve been ruthless and it’s all going to the tip. DH was prattling on about taking 4 bits to charity but as he doesn’t do the charity shop run, he can go whistle. Our local tip is super environmentally friendly and they have a resell shop/area so it can go to that.

I successfully did Marie Kondo.

There's still pockets of stuff to do, but on the whole my house has improved a lot. We've been able to get rid of storage furniture.

I would start with either books or your clothes if you want to take that approach.

My front room thank goodness I cleared a few months ago and regularly manage to declutter the toy boxes so it’s easy to tidy up and I got rid of all the dvds at same time so it’s clear it literally needs hoovering daily and a dust sometimes it’s literally the only room that is calm.

I’ve done the hallway I’ve got a bin bag full of horrible old shoes boots wellies etc that are too small or just totally ruined so that looks better. The kitchen feels overwhelming to tackle but I’m hoping ds has his nap after lunch so I can do that

I feel your pain , stuff makes me very stressed , I swear it breeds .
I have filled loads of bin bags , plus 2 boot fulls of stuff for charity ,luckily a friend collects for a charity otherwise it would just sit in my car
However the house is still a tip , it doesn't help I have 2 adult sons at home and 2 grandchildren who stay every weekend

I think we can all end up with too many clothes which cause us to have too much washing / ironing , and the nothing to wear syndrome
I have so many clothes that I convince myself I will get back into , its madness

I can't be the only person that gets excited at the prospect of a fresh skip at the front door. It's great! Last skip had half the contents of the shed and a sofa I literally tried to give away. The skip at the front of the house forces me to fill it! I can't recommend it enough!
I honesty thought my live would have ore excitement and adventures....but there you go!

aveenos · 16/12/2019 12:14

just. get. rid!!!!

I do it a few times a year. it's the only way to stay on top of things and it feels so good afterwards.

I try to pick out the good bits for charity bit skip that if you cannot.

KittenVsXmastree · 16/12/2019 12:22

I'd go through the whole house for rubbish - stuff that is broken, ripped, useless or only fit for the bin for some other reason. And bin the lot. You should now have much less stuff, and you can then decide if the next pass through the house should be a "for charity" or "bin it". It's amazing how, once you have been through a room and think it's done how much more stuff to go there is.

Jan last year I made a pact to bin one carrier bags with of stuff each week (I lived somewhere that handed out single use carried bags like candy). So used to pick a cupboard or small room and bag up the junk. I also kept the space in the bottom of a wardrobe for stuff that could be useful to someone else, and when that space was full, either put it on a local selling group or dropped off at charity. If you can get to a manageable state, just a bag once a week nade a massive difference - and often it was way more than a bag from one cupboard/wardrobe/toybox.

Good luck!

Op I feel your pain. I started today as the toy clutter was overwhelming me. My DDs bedroom just seems to never be tidy and no matter what we do it seems to always look cluttered and untidy. I started with the toys that are downstairs in overflowing toy boxes and I have two black bin bags ready to go out. I am determined to get the DC bedrooms tackled tomorrow. Mine have gotten into LEGO now and this seems to be a whole new hell of trying to organise it.

fligglepige · 16/12/2019 14:08

I threw 4 massive bin bags full of stuff into the skip today! Love a skip run!
