Had a bit of a pre Christmas house declutter earlier and found that DH has THIRTEEN unused Lynx shower gels in the bathroom cupboard - all from Christmas last year.

Having chucked out a load of moisturer/bath sets il never use I had to sigh hand thinking about the next influx I’m going to get from his relatives this year.

I try not to be ungrateful but we’ve got such a tiny house and hoardes of toiletries really isn’t conducive to minimalist living!

What do you always get for Christmas/Birthdays that you wish you didn’t?

Alcohol. I’ve never been that enthused about it nor like the taste of it. Yet someone wants to give me a bottle because that’s what people my age seemingly like 🙄.

Chocolate, not big on it, very particular and only have a bit around Christmas and rarely ever again until next Christmas.

Make-up kits - I’m of a darker complexion so most make-up kits rarely suit.

Bubble bath kits- I’ll take a bath bomb before I take a bubble bath kit that will sit on a shelf for over a year.

Anything floral scented, I detest floral scents and have never shown interest in them.

Hand and body creams- I like them but rarely do I get any that actually moisturise or keep my dry hands moisturiser for longer than an hour. I make my own moisturisers and they keep me much more moisturised than anything I’ve ever been given.

  • moisturised
phoenixrosehere · 16/12/2019 21:12

Oh and home stuff like tea towels, bath towels, and bedsheets.

It is just weird and never a style I would ever choose. Who wants Union Jack tea towels? I sure don’t.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 16/12/2019 21:27

Body scrub. Have never used it in my life. Shower gel and body lotion I do use, but it's a strange gift when you think about it. Candles and alcohol are OK but I still have gin left from last Christmas!

CountessWindyBottom · 16/12/2019 21:34

Please don’t give the toiletries to charity shops. Any initiatives dealing with the homeless are always desperate for toiletries, sanitary products, warm hats, socks and gloves.

Whattheduck · 16/12/2019 21:37

White wine - I hate it
Ferraro Rocher - yuk
Fruity fragranced toiletries
Gifts for the home eg pictures or signs that have quotes on them
Cheap pyjamas especially the fleecy type

Shite wine/prosecco

YouveDoneItToYourself · 16/12/2019 21:44

Cue 200 people telling OP to give unwanted gifts to charity or foodbanks...she has said she will!

I agree with most of these. Makes me wonder if the smelly sets you buy in charity shops are from 1985 and have just been in circulation because nobody wants them!

thetreeisstressingmeout · 16/12/2019 21:46

Wine - I'm fairly vocal about how I don't drink it

absopugginglutely · 16/12/2019 21:57

Ooh I love ferero richer! I could eat a whole box in one go!

Sparklybaublefest · 16/12/2019 21:58

chocolates, ok, i will eat it but it is not my favourite, it is my dh favourite,
i hate to say it, but photo frames, however my dc Now buy me a photoframe with a photo in already, which is perfect
I can just never decide what photo to put in a blank photo frame.

Sparklybaublefest · 16/12/2019 21:59

showergel, its a No from me.

manicmij · 16/12/2019 22:04

Toiletries you don't like or think you will use, hand into a foodbank they will be grateful. I wish people wouldn't give me chocolates and wine. By the end of the festive season I can't stand the sight of them and give them away in raffles, tombolas etc.

WhiskersPete · 16/12/2019 22:08

Body lotion/butter. Make it stop

Joeler · 16/12/2019 22:16

I've been given a mini hot water bottle wearing a jumper for four years running. All off different people.Got one from my Secret Santa today. I never complain of the cold and I'm 40 why not a full size one?

Mothership4two · 16/12/2019 22:19

Toiletries as I have sensitive skin and I am quite fussy about what I use. Scented candles, not my thing and again I am quiet sensitive to scents. Alcohol as I don't really drink.

BennyTheBall · 16/12/2019 22:25

I have been given one gin glass with a tiny bottle of gin. One. What the heck?

angelfacecuti75 · 16/12/2019 22:33

Donate the shower gels to a local food bank. They always need toiletries too.

SympatheticSwan · 16/12/2019 22:36

Does anyone actually use body butter? Or is it something that was invented specifically for Christmas giving?

Mintjulia · 16/12/2019 22:37

Candles. Every birthday & Xmas & valentines, my ex would buy me a flippin’ candle.

I’m the sort of person who falls asleep on the sofa after a long week at work. I never ever use candles because we would all have burnt to a crisp by now. I’ve tried explaining to him but it makes no difference. Confused
I give them to cancer research while he’s not looking.

JuneB1979 · 16/12/2019 22:38

@RoLaren the women’s refuges are always grateful for toiletries or your local food bank

SympatheticSwan · 16/12/2019 22:39

I also get the same scarf (& I mean completely identical) from FIL every year.
Made me laugh. And he probably thinks that you are losing them every year, so feels obliged to replace!

Hoolihan · 16/12/2019 22:46

STOP MENTIONING THE FUCKING FOODBANK JESUS CHRIST!!!!!

Lovely13 · 16/12/2019 22:46

Maybe everyone needs to think more before buying stuff that is not needed. Perhaps a day out to panto, archery, sponsor a donkey, homeless person. Then some socks and maybe a board game to unwrap. Everyone needs socks. And board game can be played on the day!

Sparklybaublefest · 16/12/2019 22:47

so can you go to tesco with your unwanted smellies, and just put them in?
