To think the headline about young MP giving away half her wage is misleading?

A friend shared an article with the headline "Britain's youngest MP vows to only take home £35k of her £79k salary" with lots of comments that it's great she is giving away half her salary.

www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/britains-youngest-mp-vows-only-21094591?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mirror_main

By the time you take into account tax, NI, pension, possibly student loan etc her take home would be in the region of 40-45k. So whilst it's great she's planning on donating 5-10k and it's a lot more than a lot of people, she is nowhere near giving away "half" her salary. Also she mentions she wants to take home a "working" salary. The average nurse takes home way less than 35k!! I work for the NHS and I don't know a single one of my colleagues who takes home that much.

Ultimately, she may want everyone to earn £35k after tax etc, of course. I'm relieved she doesn't think everyone who is employed should actually be earning hugely less than that.

SarahH12 · 15/12/2019 09:51

She told Nottinghamshire Live. "It's not about philanthropy and it's not that MPs don't deserve that salary, it's the fact our teaching assistants, nurses and firefighters do as well. "When they get the pay rise they deserve, so will I.

Hmm so why not pay herself the average wage of teaching assistants, nurses and firefighters? Also it doesn't benefit the charity any less (or more) by publicising it.

SarahH12 - I refer you to my comment above. What exactly is wrong with you? Do you want to try and live on the salary of a TA?

Walkaround · 15/12/2019 09:54

And it benefits no-one to quietly whinge you think you are paid less than you deserve.

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 15/12/2019 09:59

She will be doing a far bigger job than a teaching assistant!!

Christ OP she is 23, starting out in her career. Trying to go something right. She will be on call 24/7 to her constituents. Even teachers, firefighters and nurses get days off!

Do you want her to do the job she will be expected to do and take home about 12k?

What would make you happy here?

SarahH12 · 15/12/2019 10:01

I said average. If you average TA, nurses and firefighters it's more than a TA wage. Given that she's 23, chances are her outgoings are a lot less than those of us with families.

Who's whinging about their pay or saying they think they deserve more? I haven't once said that about my pay.

This is the most bizarrely mean spitited post I think I've ever seen.

Young woman donates large amount of cash to charity.

Op says wow look at her what a bastard.

Bonkers.

SarahH12 · 15/12/2019 10:05

^What would make you happy here?^

Her quietly giving money to charity and not feeling the need to go to the papers.

But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing

AllergicToAMop · 15/12/2019 10:09

Ffs OP you are just making yourself look more and more spiteful and stupid

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 15/12/2019 10:14

What difference does it make that she is publicising that she is not keeping her full salary? It doesn't take away from the causes she is donating to.

Is your problem that a 23 year old is earning more than you?
Why not go about increasing your own earning power?

SarahH12 · 15/12/2019 10:14

Because I think donating 5-10k is nothing to run to the papers about? Sure thing.

It doesn't add to it either. All it comes across as is a publicity stunt.

Why not turn your spite on those MPs who don’t donate portions of their salary? There’s quite a few out there... Hmm

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 15/12/2019 10:15

By the way, loads of people are earning more than you, and not giving any of it away.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 15/12/2019 10:17

£5-10K is a lot of money to give to charity. Every year.

Walkaround · 15/12/2019 10:18

If TAs and MPs had the same take home income every month, I would totally opt to be a TA. Thinking many groups of people are underpaid is not the same thing as thinking everyone should be paid the average of a TA's, nurse's and firefighter's average salary...

I do not think she is wrong to highlight unjustified inequalities - it is part of her job as an MP to highlight them. She stood for election on the back of those principles. It's kind of weird to criticise her for penalising herself to highlight the fact that she is lucky to be able to afford to. It's actually her job as an MP to raise public consciousness on this, having been elected on that platform. To quietly give her money away would have no political impact whatsoever, so would actually make her a generous person but a rubbish MP.

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 15/12/2019 10:18

So what if it's a publicity stunt. She's still actually doing it. She's a public figure. Who now people know her name. Know her constituency. Know about her. You know, a very important part of her job that people know about her.

OrangeSlices998 · 15/12/2019 10:18

I was probably earning around 30k as a newly qualified midwife in London.

You sound bitter OP, your issue is she isn’t giving away enough? Do me a favour. She’s giving away far more than you I’m sure.

SarahH12 · 15/12/2019 10:19

For anyone who clearly can't read, I have no problem with the amount I earn. I have no problem with anyone earning more than me. What I do have a problem with is publicity stunts over donating at best 10k when you have minimal outgoings.

Though if you haven't grasped that from all of my previous posts, you won't from this one either so I'm out

doublebarrellednurse · 15/12/2019 10:19

Not as misleading as the Blythe MP who has been saying that he's a mental health nurse and has never been registered nurse ever and has been warned by the NMC to stop repeating his bullshit.

Mrsjayy · 15/12/2019 10:23

What would you like this young woman to do Op she is taking a wage she sees is liveable some lower earners will be claiming working benefits to make up their wages is that what you want her to do ?

SarahH12 · 15/12/2019 10:27

@doublebarrellednurse Shock wow!

Why though? Why on earth would you have a problem with some one donating a massive amount of their own money, percentage wise, to charity and then having it reported in the paper? Do you also have a problem with Bill Gates? Warren Buffet? Anybody who donates to charity? Or just (Labour) MPs?

Walkaround · 15/12/2019 10:29

SarahH12 - do you understandnwhat an MP's role actually is?

SarahH12 · 15/12/2019 10:32

@doublebarrellednurse have just googled him and found the NursingTimes article. It's a blinking shame the title isn't protected. Stupid man shouldn't be in the profession. What happened to honesty and integrity being an important part of being in the healthcare sector. Xmas Angry
