To think if you run a business, you ought not to be contentious about politics on social media?

I don't use social media much, but I do use Twitter mainly as PR and research for my small business (I'm freelance.) I'm always shocked how some of my contacts are very open about their political leanings, mainly through Twitter posts, seemingly unaware of how their clients or customers might not agree with their views (and damage their business.)

AIBU to think that if you are self-employed and reliant on certain core clients, you ought to be more careful about voicing strong political opinions? I say nothing about who I vote(d) for simply because I don't want to alienate clients I work with if they have different views.

Oh yes. LinkedIn. It is turning little bit into a standard Facebook, doesn't it.

burritofan · 14/12/2019 12:39

you might find that there are a lot less people dying without them.
Incorrect both factually and grammatically.

I use the services of a company that made it very clear they had polar opposite beliefs to mine (gloating yesterday) I had to step away before I said anything that could burn all bridges

For me, business should follow the same rules as a polite dinner party. No religion, politics or sex.

AutumnRose1 · 14/12/2019 14:02

Jamie not being on any dinner circuits, I don’t know if anyone follows those rules anymore?

I run our company social media account. It's on my phone. I have to be very very careful to ensure that I don't accidentally get my personal account and company account mixed up. Otherwise I could be in trouble..

DryHeaving · 14/12/2019 14:12

I agree @Jamiefraserskilt

Tellmetruth4 · 14/12/2019 14:18

I don’t mind knowing as it means I can take my money elsewhere. There’s a local tradesman on Facebook sharing Britain First memes. I don’t want to give him my money. Likewise companies like Dyson and Whetherspoons will never get my money due to their hard Brexit stance. I have no problem with normal Conservatives but despise the ERG and ‘bring back hanging’ types.

To be clear- I did message the cafe concerned privately and gave them the opportunity to make a change before I posted on their FB.....

Hi OP - Business owner here Smile

I rarely post about contentious subjects on social media but for this election campaign I did so on my personal Facebook and Instagram accounts. On my business social media accounts I simply reminded everybody to vote.

Quite honestly, if certain clients end up seeing my views on my personal pages and become offended, then they're not the clients I want on my business premises or to deal with. I think the phrase would be "off you fuck, then!"

That said... I do know someone who was fired from a Law Firm for posting relentlessly about the referendum in 2016. But I'm self-employed and not really fussed about what others think Grin

PhilSwagielka · 14/12/2019 19:11

I don't use my Twitter to promote myself as a translator but if I did, I'd keep it apolitical. It's not worth the hassle.

PhilSwagielka · 14/12/2019 19:21

@Tellmetruth4 I'm the same. I'm not too arsed if a business owner is a Tory but if they're Britain First/pro-Tommy Robinson? Forget it. I don't want to give my money to someone who hates people like me.
