Standing ovations

I congratulated a friend who is an actress on the play she is in getting a standing ovation the night I was there and she said it was nice but that standing ovations didn't really mean anything anymore.
Aibu to kind of agree with her and to wish this acknowledgement could go back to being the special tribute it once was?
At almost every play I've been to in recent years the audience stand and applaud no matter how bad it was and the whole thing has become meaningless. It's really hard now to acknowledge a brilliant play or performance because each one gets the same accolade.

I agree! It’s like if you don’t stand up you haven’t enjoyed the show.

We go quite a lot to the theatre, and I can only remember 2 standing ovations.
One was the penultimate performance of a show that had been going for about 2 years, other was recently - Mary Poppins and that was well deserved.

I go to quite a few plays and shows and no, they don’t all get standing ovations. They probably happen more often than the used to though.

@BodenGate exactly. My friend said some actors feel almost insulted nowadays if they don't get a standing ovation.

The last time I gave a standing ovation was when Lou Reed played a small gig in my local theatre. My standing ocarina are still heart felt!

Off topic but I’ve noticed people applauding and sometimes giving standing ovations in the cinema at the end of a film. It’s not like the actors can see or hear you Confused

I blame Simon cowell

I don't find standing ovations are the norm at all, I do quite a bit if theatre and I see them only a fraction of the time. I suspect west end theatre for example has more tourists who are determined to have a good time so may be more keen but up north its definitely not a given.

I'm in Dublin and they're almost standard here. There was an article about it a while ago in The Irish Times and the journalist quoted quite a bit from 'The Lady' who seemed to feel the same about them.

It goes alongside the inflation of language- a bit better than average is now 'brilliant' or 'amazing' for example.
