To think Andy Burnham should be the next Labour leader?

Think he would be great and Labour would become much more electable under him than what they ever have been under Corbyns leadership.

Who do you all think will get the job?

He'd get my vote. He brought in free bus travel for 16-18 year olds in the Manchester area. Now my daughter can get to and from college without it costing a fortune.Grin

No, sorry that ship has sailed. You cannot go back into the past looking for someone who was suitable years back. Labour has to look to the future.

They will inevitably pick someone like Rebecca Long Winded or god forbid, Emily Thornberry. So bad tempered and lacking in any charm whatsoever. The best to be said is that she turns up and faces the music whilst getting increasingly angry and making matters even worse. Also goes off "topic" and contradicts JC.

Is there anyone not blocked out by Momentum? Whilst Corbyn prevaricates about when he will go, he is aiming to keep Momentum to the front of all decision making. Len McLuskey will have a huge say as it is the union vote. He wrote to our family three times in five weeks reminding us to vote the right/left way - we are in Unite.

MoonlightBonnet · 14/12/2019 13:03

Len can write to Unite members as much as he likes. He doesn’t control their votes and he doesn’t even lead the biggest union. Once Corbyn is gone he can be the absolute irrelevance he should had been all along. He should be fucking apologising to his members for what he’s done.

They will chose a woman surely.

Male or female has nothing to do with it. They should choose who’s best for the job.

AudacityOfHope · 14/12/2019 13:28

Hillary Benn
Keir Starmer
Yvette Cooper

Halleli · 14/12/2019 13:32

Male or female has nothing to do with it. They should choose who’s best for the job.

If they don't choose a woman this time, meaning that Labour will continue to be the only major party never to have had a female leader, they will be handing the Conservatives a stick to beat them with.

Most sensible Labour people can see that.

AuntSpiker · 14/12/2019 13:36

YANBU he did a lot for the Hillsborough families.

Only when he was shamed into doing something by a crowd of Liverpool supporters barracking him.

Jasmin82 · 14/12/2019 14:03

He hasn't actually done anything as Mayor of Manchester. Homelessness is no better, despite him saying he's going to sort it (every year).
He does like his photo ops, though.
I don;t want anyone who is all about the photo op. I want someone who is actually going to do something (or at least try) rather than just say they will. Remember, actions speak louder than words. Unfortunately, many appear to have forgotten that, or don't care about actions so long as the words sound good.

SilverySurfer · 14/12/2019 14:47

Until the trilogy (Corbyn, McDonnell and Momentum) leave the party, it's irrelevant who the new leader will be.

Having a non-MP as leader - how would that work? How would they respond to Prime Minister's Questions? By Skype? Hmm

justcly · 14/12/2019 15:49

@SilverySurfer

They would do what the SNP do, appoint a "Leader in Westminster". Not that I'm suggesting it's a good idea, but honestly, what a silly question.

PatienceVirtue · 14/12/2019 16:31

I've re-joined (left over their handling of the referendum and Article 50) in order to be able to vote. We need what Janice Turner called Centrist Entryism.

My dream is a Jess Phillips/Keir Starmer joint leadership. I know they've never had two leaders, but why not? Would show collaboration and be very much the antithesis of B Johnson's maniacal egotism. Jess would be the jazz hands charisma, Keir would forensically do all the boring details stuff. I especially like the fact that this is the opposite way round for most female-male partnerships. He's London, she's midlands.

I've had personal experience of Thornberry and she's bloody awful.

Other two I'd consider would be Clive Lewis or Lisa Nandy if we need someone a bit further to the left. Whatever happens we need one anti-momentum candidate to unite behind.

Fr0g · 14/12/2019 16:40

Lady Nugent aka Emily Thornbury hardly rings out non-London centric voice of the people.

I'm tempted to join Labour to have a say - I'd love it to be Jess Phillips, but sadly lack of minesterial/shadow minesterial expereince is likely to be a hinderance.

They will chose a woman surely - it's never occurred to them before, despite several strong senior women in the party

Fr0g · 14/12/2019 16:45

@patiencevirtue - agree Jess Phillips/Keir Starmer would be a good combination - starmer as deputy to do the boring detail stuff maybe?

Also agree re Thornberry -sadly she's my local MP.

If I join now, will I be able to vote, or is there a minimum membership period?

PatienceVirtue · 14/12/2019 17:12

I don't know if it's long enough to join now - I guess it depends on how long Jeremy reflects. I hope it's only full members who'll be able to vote, not the £3 version.

I think people will think Jess Phillips is a bit of a lightweight which is why it should be a joint ticket with Keir. I really like the idea of a joint leader rather than leader/deputy as it would be fresh and forward thinking, like a job share.
