Would it be bad to donate prescription food to a food bank?

Dd is 17yo coeliac and gets free gluten free long life bread. We have boxes of it piled up (she gets about 7 boxes a month) as she’s gone off it. It’s still in date and rather than waste it I thought I’d give it to the food bank which I think is fine.

But then I thought how about carrying on getting the bread while she still gets free prescriptions?

We’re in one county where people get gf bread on prescription but are 3 miles from the county border where there’s no gf food on prescription. I worry about coeliacs who can’t afford gf bread.

Thanks @Stupiddriver1
Would be a great idea to hand it into the food bank, I bet they get virtually nothing suitable.

Might be a slight exaggeration but I’m always binning mouldy loaves.

You can probably just freeze the loaf and take slices out as needed, I always did that with my dd's prescription low-protein bread as it never kept well.

YANBU to donate the existing bread but YWBU to keep getting the prescriptions and giving them to the food bank as it costs the NHS more than the bread is actually worth.

Waveysnail · 13/12/2019 21:32

Yes donate. Also have chat with different local pharmacies they may be able to provide a different brand of bread. NHS sunderland allows prescribing of genius seeded brown loaf which is nice.

It costs the NHS a ridiculous amount of money to provide GF bread, something like £30 a loaf. It's like asking them to give you paracetamol on prescription when you can buy it for 30p.
But it yourself if you can afford it. Stop the prescriptions.

CherryPlum · 13/12/2019 21:36

It really isn't up to you to decide how NHS money gets spent. You really must cancel the prescription. Your plan sounds fraudulent!

SpruceTree · 13/12/2019 21:37

As PP have said you need to freeze the bread in small portions once opened. It lasts much longer than 18hrs once opened, it is much more longer lasting than muggle bread.

dellacucina · 13/12/2019 21:41

Why in god's name would it cost the NHS £30 a loaf for low quality gf bread?

Btw OP, I have recently tried the genius fibre filled cob (not sure of exact name) and it's really nice!

Stupiddriver1 · 13/12/2019 21:43

Dd likes the Genius bread which we can buy in tesco. Can only get Glutafin I think it is on prescription. Used to be able to get Juvela but they stopped that.

Donate what you already have, but then stop the prescription as that money comes out of NHS funds.

So YANBU to give them what you already have, but YABU to carry on using the prescription when you won't be using it yourself anymore.

It’s against the law to give prescribed medication to another individual - they were prescribed to your daughter due to a medical need so may fall under that category
