To think that if you're totally and utterly incompetent at reversing you should practice/take lessons

This isn't a rant about people who are crap at reverse parking, more the type of people who seem utterly unable to do even the most simple reversing manoeuvre.

I regularly have to drive trucks between depots for my job, and sometimes have to navigate some pretty tight lanes where I encounter cars. I'm never a bully as I realise a big truck can be intimidating, and often I'll reverse up if it's safe to do so, to prevent the other driver from getting flustered. However, I've had two incidents this week which have really caused me to question whether some people should be on the road.

Yesterday, I encountered a woman driving a mini whilst on a pretty tight lane which had passing points every half mile or so. There was a passing point literally 10-15 feet behind her, and she had a good few feet clearance on either side. All that would've been necessary was to reverse back in a straight line and then drive into the passing point. However, she refused to do it.

I would usually have just reversed back myself, but i knew it'd be around 0.5 miles to next passing point, and my wing mirrors were pretty much in the hedge meaning that I couldn't see down the side of the truck for foliage - it'd have been very easy to put a back wheel onto the verge and sink in as I couldn't see the curves in the road - obviously I don't have a rear view mirror or back window.

I had to climb out into the hedge and politely explain my predicament. She suggested that I reverse her car back for her, which I did. No harsh words were spoken and it all turned out ok, but it's pretty shocking IMO to not be able to literally reverse 10 feet in a straight line. People generally have to do manoeuvre in their practical test, so I can only think that some people just forget everything they've learnt.

I can't reverse park. never was taught in my lessons (10 years ago) they should teach it. If I was in a country lane I could reverse backwards into a side bit if I needed to but I can't reverse into a parking space and tbh it's never being an issue.

Occasionally when I have been forced to reverse in a situation where it was far more reasonable for the other driver to do so, I have suddenly turned into a very nervous, silly woman driver and taken forever to do so. (This is not me as a driver really!). I know this is not fair to other drivers but it is quite satisfying.

@TheHootiestChristmasOwl next time you try to parallel park, when the solid part behind / next to front passenger seat (where seat belt attaches) is level to back of car you are parking behind, put your car on full wheel lock - that is the mid point of your car. When your front is at their bumper turn the wheel back. It's pretty fool proof. Just don't have too big of a gap between the vehicles.

@Lexilooo tip i learned for the horse float - put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and then turn in the direction you want the float to go.

If that was the only example of bad driving or incompetence by some people when driving, think how much fewer people would not be injured or killed in road crashes.

Well down my list of bad things done by motorists. Usually also a criticism never levied at men.

YANBU I passed my test and wasn't confident on reversing so practised at the back of car parks. I also bought a car with electric mirrors and that makes it easy to angle them to face the ground behind to see what you are moving towards. It's not a difficult problem to solve.

AlrightyyThen · 14/12/2019 11:34

YANBU at all, it's infuriating! I've seen a bus driver have to get out and reverse someone's car for them.

Although on the other hand i've found that people simply assume i can't reverse when i can (young, female driver).

Was in the school car park the other day dropping DD off and it's a tight squeeze. I needed to reverse for a 3 point turn to get back out. If you don't reverse back far enough there's a wall in the way and it would end up being like a 5 point turn or more.

I slowly reversed back towards a parked 4x4, the driver was in it and started wildly beeping her horn at me Confused She just assumed i was going to crash into her! (I was miles off) I was so furious that i got out and asked her what on earth her problem was, she was deathly silent.

I then proceeded to reverse very slowly to within 5mm of her number plate, which i really didn't need to do... but really enjoyed! And she didn't beep again. I have to reverse into a really tight driveway (cm's gap on each side for a bit) daily so it's my best driving skill.

What really annoys me is that the mini likely could see the large truck BEFORE they passed the passing place and didn't think to use it - I live in the country and the verges are utterly ruined by lazy drivers. Thank fully at this time of year they don't realise if they go in they aint getting out. I always think serves you bloody well right. No manners.

@k1233

Thanks for the tip, I tried that when I was starting out and didn't find it helped. I reverse using the mirrors and hands at quarter to three, I can reverse it fairly accurately now but it is a really long rig so not very easy to manoeuvre and the combination of a big trailer and the snugtop make visibility poor.
