Car tyres

Bought an 8 year old car today - it had 4 pirelli brand tyres on it when I saw it for a test drive.

Today when I collected it he said he had given it 4 'new tyres' of a different brand

There was nothing wrong with the pirelli tyres in the first place!

Can I go back and ask him to replace with the original pirelli tyres?

My gut is that he's sold them at profit as they were pretty new looking...

Replaced with a cheaper brand and sold the Pirellis on or kept them for his own car probably.

That or the Pirellis has a slow puncture or were worn on the inside wall

What brand did he replace them with?

It would have been best to say something when you collected it but perhaps you didn’t notice then. You can definitely ask for the tyres you originally saw but I wouldn’t hold my breath about getting them back.

People. Often put some on to pass. Mot. Once passed put part worns on that wouldn't of passed.
Very common. Has It just had mot when purchased

Are the 'new' tyres definitely brand new? You can usually tell if they're very new because they have little bits (don't know how to describe it) that wear off after a number of trips. Some of the less famous brands are still very good tyres. Maybe Google the brand name and see what the reviews are. If the tyres look worn and not brand new I'd be tempted to ask for the Pirelli tyres back (assuming the Pirellis were new) saying the car should have been 'sold as seen'.

Thanks everyone

Going to have closer look at tyres now

My guess is he’s kept them for his.
Do yours all match and are they a decent make?
They are the only part of the car in contact with the road, so decent ones are important (note decent, not necessarily expensive or the best make)

Comfortzone · 13/12/2019 15:48

Current tyres are Landsail brand and have the nobby bits on

I'm happy with the current tyres that they are brand new as he said but baffled as to why he changed them. Maybe hidden puncture in the pirellis? Or most likelyhe just wanted to keep them or sell on

Makes no sense to put new tyres on... Especially when the cars being sold. U less the previous set were worn or damaged.

Only reason is to put cheap ditch finder ones one and keep the better performing tyres for own car or for use later as spares.

Tyres vary massively depending on age, make and tread.

The £30 each ones you can get are down right dangerous and I wouldn't wish them to be on anyone's cars.

The flip side is you can get tyres that cost £200 + each...

ContinuityError · 13/12/2019 16:31

Have they put winter tyres in for you?

EvilPea · 13/12/2019 16:54

Theres a good reason he's kept the pirellis and given you Landsails, they are terrible in the wet, my work (garage) won't put them on any of his customers cars unless they absolutely insist.

Comfortzone · 13/12/2019 18:27

I called him- apparently the pirelli weren't EU standard as the car is a Japanese import (Honda)
So he had to change them to pass MOT

I'll leave it at that & probably change them myself in the spring but will see how things go

Sounds like bollocks to me.

Pirelli = good tyres/expensive.

Landsail = cheap ditchfinders.

I think he's been a bit naughty OP.

Comfortzone · 13/12/2019 18:38

He did offer me the Pirelli tyres I could take them for free

Eugh I dunno!
