WIBU to get my holiday money now even though we're not going until August?

DH and I are going away next August. The pound has shot up today. Should we get our euros now or are we better off waiting? I know it seems very premature but how likely is it the pound will stay up especially with Brexit just around the corner?

I got mine in October before the Brexit deadline (I know) but I wish I had waited until now as I would have had a much better deal.

BlaueLagune · 13/12/2019 10:44

Maybe get half the amount you need now, and keep an eye on the exchange rate for the rest.

Hefzi · 13/12/2019 10:48

I don't think it's unreasonable - sterling's at a ten year high right now

Ponoka7 · 13/12/2019 10:49

If Brexit doesn't happen, the pound will go back up.

If you've got it spare, does it really matter, anyway. Just pre order them, over £700 and you get a good rate.

KittenVsXmastree · 13/12/2019 10:55

Hefzi 10 year high?? I'm not sure its spiked that much overnight.

Sarah getting a chunk of it now sounds like a plan, if you afford to have the cash sitting in the house for 6 months. Get the rest closer to the time.

Fucck · 13/12/2019 11:04

We buy euros when they're at good rates, we know we will need them and they often seem down around the times we're travelling. We never sell any back as it's just daft, you get so little!
DH just has a separate wallet he uses purely for holidays and we keep them in there, at the back of a cupboard.

Hefzi · 13/12/2019 11:12

Kitten it was in the FT (paper version) this morning, though I appreciate that doesn't necessarily make it true

edwinbear · 13/12/2019 11:14

sterling's at a ten year high right now

No it isn't. It's at 1.1967 which last printed in April 2017. I would also suggest getting some now, and keeping an eye on the rate.

Hefzi · 13/12/2019 11:25

I think that I must have misread "ten year surge" for "ten month surge" then, Edwin Blush I did wonder "why on earth"...

Apologies for the fake news, OP

mrsbyers · 13/12/2019 18:03

I changed all my spending money over to dollars at the top of the surge lastnight - it’s given me £200 extra based on the year before. Brexit will happen so I’d buy them now while rate is still up

SarahH12 · 14/12/2019 05:03

Had a chat with DH about this and he seems adamant that if Brexit happens, the pound will get stronger. I thought the opposite though!!

ZaraW · 14/12/2019 05:20

I doubt sterling will get stronger after Brexit.

exLtEveDallas · 14/12/2019 05:55

I was annoyed when the pound plummeted after the original Brexit Ref result. I’d wanted to buy Euros the weekend before but DH didn’t agree - stupidly I listened to him.

In your shoes (and having been bitten before) I’d at least buy half now.

Flowerballs · 14/12/2019 08:05

The pound will keep steadily declining. It's only going to depreciate more and more. Two years from now very few people will be able to afford to leave the country as the pound will be worth so little outside of Great Britain.
