Avoiding causing offence when language changes

There are many words and phrases that are - quite rightly - not ok to say anymore that were bandied around when I was younger. Obviously, with some its glaringly obvious and were never thingts I would have said but how can I prevent or pre-empt what isn't Ok? In conversation the other day I was talking about someone doing an off the books job for me (what used to be called doing a foreigner) and i caught myself before I said it but where can I find out what the up to date terminology is? I really would rather notoffend someone in order to have it corrected

@AutumnCrow it's easy when something feels wrong yes - it's not realising its wrong first its aim and then upsetting someone without meaning too.
