To think the labour campaigning in here is the new "project fear"

Just that really, because you know if you don't vote Labour people will DIE

Economists agree that a Labour Government is far better for the economy as published in the FT.

Clavinova
Including 15 'economists' working at the University of Greenwich - ranked 67th in the UK for economics.

What a bizarre response, Clavinova. If you're hung up on university rankings for Economics, did you fail to notice e.g. London School of Economics, Oxford, Cambridge etc on that list?

Indeed, I did have a quick look at the profiles of the Oxbridge 'economists' last week:

5 out of 10 academics/'economists' associated with Oxford are retired (emeritus) - all of them in their 70s and 80s. Another is a professor of Geography.

7 out of 9 at Cambridge appear to be foreign nationals. One academic revealed the results of an online survey she had completed for fun - her result was 'Orthodox Marxist'.

I expect the typical Oxbridge academic is more inclined to vote LibDem, not Labour.

I have just looked at the LSE profiles - 4 academics, 3 in their 70s. One is Labour peer Lord Desai, the profile of another says this;

"Participating in a group reading all three volumes of Marx’s Capital I determined to apply Marxist political economy to the understanding of social policy in advanced capitalist societies."

I think we can safely assume that many (most) of these 'economists' are somewhat 'left-wing'. Not to mention that half of the 160 'economists' appear to be foreign nationals, some of them from Latin America - no wonder the Labour Party want to give all UK residents (as well as UK citizens) the right to vote in general elections (page 47 of the large print manifesto - I couldn't open the main one).

Are there any other EU countries granting full voting rights (in general elections) for residents as well as citizens?

In summary, you've picked through the list of signatories and dismissed (prejudged) the validity of the views of economists who are retired, too old, not working at the right universities, not a British citizen, too Marxist etc.

What characteristics would an economist need for you to accept their views on the economy?

People have already died as a result of Tory/lib dem austerity. It’s not scaremongering, it’s an actual fact.

Whattodoabout · 12/12/2019 17:16

I’d never heard of a food bank until 2011, I didn’t know they existed. I may just be over privileged but actually, I think they have vastly increased as a direct result of Tory cuts. Food banks, in 2019 Britain.

Yes, I think it's a bit odd that the Labour Party have to rely on 70-90 non-British or retired 'economists' to validate their manifesto.

Whattodoabout
Food banks are a feature of modern Europe - 1.65 million people used a food bank in Germany last year;

Turns out that "project fear", with regards to Brexit, was spot on. So I'm not sure what your point is.

90schic · 12/12/2019 20:23

Think ‘project racist’ was used widely pre Brexit.

It is annoying the whole nhs arguement

The nhs May be under funded but it’s also very badly managed

Why is it that people can still get 17p paracetamol on prescription for what £8-9 nhs charge? Why is it that my thyroxine allows me to have all free prescriptions? - not just thyroxine - all! that’s just wasteful. Esp as I can afford to pay.Ploughing more and more money isn’t the answer imo

It needs complete overhaul.

🤔 funny how there was a thread up earlier saying there were loads of conservative party bots on here

MyNewHairdryer · 12/12/2019 20:42

In 2015 I left MN for a few years due to the aggression and viciousness that followed the Conservative election victory. ‘Tory cunts’, ‘murdering conservative scum’ ‘people will die because of your vote’ etc etc. I just didn’t want to interact with people who thought and said things like that. Sadly, MNHQ does not seem to be bothered by this sort of vitriol.
I only returned recently, so I’m waiting to see what tomorrow will bring and whether I’ll be leaving MN again 🤷‍♀️

Littletabbyocelot · 12/12/2019 20:43

Is there an irony in complaining about project fear from Labour supporters while describing the Labour Party as anti-semite terrorist sympathisers? The Labour Party has had a problem with anti semitism which it was slow to tackle but that doesn't make it an anti-semetic party (the Tory party has an equally obvious problem with islamaphobia and homophobia but neither of those things define the party). There is also a difference between sympathising with the grievances that lead to terrorism and supporting terrorism itself. For example, I can understand why the images of toddlers being killed by bombs in Syria increased Islamic extremism here. It doesn't mean I find their actions anything other than abhorrent.

I think 'the Labour Party manifesto will destroy the economy' is equally project fear. Most independent economic assessments view the two main party manifestos as having similar (not great) economic impact.

I agree entirely with the above. Curious to know whether you have made the decision to pay for your prescriptions.
