To complain DD has been denied a vote in Cambridge?

NC'd to avoid outing.
DD is at uni in Cambridge- she is on the electoral roll in Cambridge (not here at home) and applied for a postal vote before the deadline as she is now back home for the holidays.
No postal ballot arrived. She phone Cambridge council who said it was not actioned and they can't find the e-mail.
She has shown me the e-mail (with scanned form attachment) - it was indeed sent before the deadline and must have arrived as it was in the 'sent' folder and she did not receive a 'delivery failure' e-mail.

Cambridge City Council has been having intermittent e-mail problems (according to their website). The guy in the elections team basically did an apologetic shrug on the phone.

Is there anything DD can do to still vote? We are over 200 miles from Cambridge.
This would be her first general election and she (and I) feel angry that she did everything properly and is being denied her vote.

BovaryX - so you genuinely think that people who vote Labour are more likely to commit fraud than people who vote for any other party?.... You sound quite obnoxious and a little bit demented.

Walkaround · 11/12/2019 19:42

I guess you'll be claiming next that Labour voters are more likely to be rich enough to traipse around the country voting fraudulently in multiple places.

Skysblue · 11/12/2019 20:09

You should not have taken her off the electoral roll at home - ie when that form came round asking who lives there, you should have included her on it.

It’s your mistake more than Cambridge Council’s.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 12/12/2019 07:27

It’s your mistake more than Cambridge Council’s.

It really isn't.

Wtfdoipick · 12/12/2019 07:31

We don't know that cambridge have made a mistake, it depends which address the daughter used.

DoTheHop · 12/12/2019 07:40

It's unclear from the OP whether A the dd is registered to vote anywhere B whether she's registered for a postal vote.

It's unclear from the OP whether A the dd is registered to vote anywhere B whether she's registered for a postal vote.

The OP clearly stated that her DD is on the electoral roll in Cambridge and applied for a postal vote before the deadline and that Cambridge Council say they didn't get the email.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 12/12/2019 08:50

Or rather that the council "can't find the email"

tttigress · 12/12/2019 08:52

It is illegal to register to vote on 3 places

Toddlerteaplease · 12/12/2019 09:00

If she's registered to postal vote. She can't vote in person.

Sannapaws · 12/12/2019 09:04

The onus is on your DD to make sure she can vote - which includes checking where she's registered and the fact that she can be registered on more than one district as a student. She seems to have left it a bit late to query the lateness of the postal vote.
This is why I don't think the vote should be extended to 16 year olds - if young adults this age can't even sort themselves out then are outraged when they can't vote.

user1493494961 · 12/12/2019 09:50

I think electoral fraud by students and postal voters could make a big difference in this election. None of the parties seem that bothered but it will need to be addressed at some point.

Fr0g · 12/12/2019 09:58

i accept it's irritating, but she should have checked earlier - presumably friends/colleagues in the same situation would have mentioned receiving postal vote forms?

It's hardly a marginal seat, so one vote unlikely to make much difference - as with much of the electorate given the crap first past the post system we are landed with.

Aridane · 12/12/2019 10:01

Friends have also experienced postal votes not turning up, despite having applied for well in time

Really? I cannot imagine any student paying £10k a year in fees to come out with the hope of getting a decent job would risk a criminal record and £5k fine to just vote twice?? I just don’t think it happens as it doesn’t make sense to risk your whole future for one extra vote??

AnotherEmma · 12/12/2019 10:31

OP, would your DD mind you sharing who she wanted to vote for? I'm curious.

I think (and hope) that Daniel Zeichner will win in Cambridge, by a comfortable margin. Might be wrong of course.

Sannapaws · 12/12/2019 12:48

Your DD has missed voting in one of the most important elections of a generation. Hopefully she has learned her lesson.

DarlingNikita · 12/12/2019 12:50

Hopefully she has learned her lesson.

Do people really get off on this kind of sanctimonious lip-pursing? Confused

LochJessMonster · 12/12/2019 12:54

Postal votes are suppose to be for people that can't vote on the Thursday. They are sent out in advanced so can be posted and arrive in time to be counted (althugh can eb handed into a polling station on the day).

I despair at all these people who realise on the day that their postal vote hasn't arrived. Its not like this election has crept up on us...

She can go to her local Electoral Registration Office and get an emergency postal vote today.

Sannapaws · 12/12/2019 12:56

I'm serious! We're handing over the running of a country to a generation who can't be bothered to register to use their vote properly then mummy comes online to ask if she should complain on DDs behalf??

Sannapaws · 12/12/2019 12:57

They need to wake the F up!

Aridane · 12/12/2019 13:08

Postal voting has been screwed up this year - all the people I know who applied for postal votes well within time never received them . Like OP's daughter. Like OP's DD, they will not be able to vote. Lesson learnt about inefficient governmental administration!

DarlingNikita · 12/12/2019 13:09

Sannapaws, she tried and, because of a local internet problem (which they won't admit/take responsibility for), she's lost out on a vote. It's not a case of 'can't be bothered'.

DoTheHop · 12/12/2019 13:12

Ye, the media are picking up on the amount of postal votes gone wrong.
Mine arrived with no problems about 2 weeks ago.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 12/12/2019 13:18

I'm not sure people with poor comprehension should be allowed to vote.
