What a fuck up - apple watch delivered to wrong address

NigellaAwesome · 10/12/2019 20:19

My DH ordered a new apple watch from a major high street seller. The order was placed over the phone - I was with him and heard the conversation.

We got various emails today stating that it was due to be delivered today by Royal Mail. Then an email stating it had been delivered at 5:10pm. I was in the house, and no-one had called to the door. I checked with neighbours - no delivery.

I phoned the seller, and they said that they had delivered to an address 50 miles away, which had a similar postcode, but the address doesn't bear any resemblance to ours. They said it must have been our fault for inputting the wrong address online. When I said it had been ordered on the phone, they said we must have provided the wrong address. Conveniently, they say they don't record calls for online orders.

They have suggested that we drive to the address at which it was delivered to ask for it back. I have an issue with this because,

  1. It's 50 miles away, so 100 mile round trip;
  2. I have no idea how the householders might react;
  3. It's not our mistake

The major high street seller seems to be suggesting it is our loss. They have said they will get a courier to attempt to collect it from the address tomorrow, but if the householder denies knowledge it will be a police matter. I know that the police will say it is a civil matter.

AIBU to think this isn't our issue, and the seller needs to sort this out?

Call your bank.
Also write it up on their Facebook page.
Strange that works to get things sorted.

Did you pay by credit card? I'd try and claim that way if so!

MolyHolyGuacamole · 10/12/2019 20:24

'Major high street seller' so not an apple store? That coupled with the fact that it was ordered over the phone (did not know this was a thing) might make it tricky, but I'd still email head office. Sound threatening.

DecemberSnow · 10/12/2019 20:25

Live Tweet them. It works!

Quicknewusername · 10/12/2019 20:26

50 miles away but a similar postcode? That doesnt sound right!

Can they send you a confirmation of exactly which address they've got for you?

katmunchkin · 10/12/2019 20:27

They didn't send you any confirmation of the order as a receipt?

aveenos · 10/12/2019 20:33

did you not get an order confirmation?

which shop was that?

randomchap · 10/12/2019 20:40

Any remote sale put through the credit card machine would need the card holders house number, and numbers from the postcode as part of antifraud security. The card machines wouldn't accept payment if the house number and postcode were wrong. Did the address that they sent the watch to match the numbers in your address? If not then they probably did take your address correctly over the phone and then cocked up sending it elsewhere.

I'd threaten a charge back as they have no proof of delivery.

AlrightyyThen · 10/12/2019 20:46

Definitely cancel with your bank. If you know for sure you didn't place the order to the incorrect address just say you've been charged for an order you didn't place.

ProfessorSlocombe · 10/12/2019 20:51

Conveniently, they say they don't record calls for online order

If they want to rebut your DHs recollection of the conversation, they need a recording. Otherwise it will be assumed your DH is correct.

You aren't supposed to record card details but any halfway decent system will be able to handle pause & resume.

Waveysnail · 10/12/2019 20:55

Did you use a credit card?

BikeRunSki · 10/12/2019 20:57

50 miles away but a similar postcode? That doesnt sound right!

I’m thinking something like LS21 (north of Sheffield) and S21 (south of Leeds) where the letters are slightly different and the number the same.

iamthevirginmarywith2weans · 10/12/2019 21:02

They just have the billing address correct because the payment wouldn't be processed if the address didn't match the account paid with.

Push them harder op. This is their fault.

Mickhasnotorso · 10/12/2019 21:02

Which shop takes phone orders in this day and age?

BikeRunSki · 10/12/2019 21:03

I have placed phone orders with John Lewis and Boden recently.

Yesmate · 10/12/2019 21:05

Tweet, fb, email after email. They are trying it on because they can’t be bothered to fix it

Shitfuckoh · 10/12/2019 21:05

@Mickhasnotorso John lewis do.

Illeana · 10/12/2019 21:07

They must have the billing address correct if they charged you? Ask what billing address and delivery address they’ve used and what proof of delivery they have. Ultimately it’s their problem, they need to send you another and it’s up to them to retrieve the other watch.

halloumi2019 · 10/12/2019 21:12

As someone that just bought a high end Apple Watch recently I cringed at the title. The bloody addressee must have thought they won the lottery as they ripped open your parcel😕 I would definitely report thus to the police, both in your local area and in their local area as there’s a high chance they may steal the item.

Definitely file a chargeback and keep pushing the company.

Sorry but why on earth would you give them the wrong bloody address? You obviously know what your postcode is, you’re the one paying for the item - it’s obviously in your best interests to give the correct postcode! Just like it’s in their best interests to try to blame you with such idiotic reasoning!

LolaDabestest · 10/12/2019 21:16

Seems strange to order on the phone? Faff. Anyway the major high street retailer are being very unprofessional share the shit out of it. Tbh something sounds a bit dodgy to me anyway.

halloumi2019 · 10/12/2019 21:17

Such a good point re the billing address - however I have paid for things over the phone without having to provide a billing address, eg deposit payments. They just need the long number, expiry and security code to input it into a standard card reader? I can’t be sure whether they had my address on file though.

The police will definitely record this as a crime. It’s obvious that the parcel wasn’t intended for the recipients if they haven’t paid for such a high value item, even if it was addressed to them. It is essentially theft, especially as the parcel was sent from a retailer. It was sent by mistake, it is not unsolicited goods. They are stealing the item if they refuse to return it to the courier.

halloumi2019 · 10/12/2019 21:20

I used to work in retail and I know for a fact that card machines don’t need a billing address to take payment for a manual/cardholder not present transaction. You just enter the card numbers....(it was a massive fraud risk). So I wouldn’t be surprised if this retailer inputted the payment through a card reader where the billing address wasn’t necessary.

NigellaAwesome · 10/12/2019 21:49

We paid part gift card, part credit card. Ordered by phone from Curry's on Black Friday as they did a price match deal, but only if you phoned them.

Address worked like this:

ours: AP4 3GP (not real) 25 Applehill road

They sent it to AP34 3GP 25 Peartree road.

So not only do postcodes not match, but peartree road doesn't even match to the postcode they used.
