AIBU to call the RSPCA? Dogs left in car for hours

There’s a car parked on my road, I’ve seen it a few times lately but don’t think it’s my neighbours, it’s a big car and there’s two dogs in the car. I can’t see them but I can hear them barking. Took the kids to school, and they were there. It’s now nearly 11am and they’re still there. They left the window open a tiny bit, but there’s no sign of the owner coming back and the car got a yellow sticker on it saying ‘security dogs in car /dog handler ‘ or something. . I feel so sorry for the poor dogs, sitting in there cold and barking. Should I call the RSPCA?

I would. Poor dogs.

AllesAusLiebe · 10/12/2019 10:57

I would, OP. When you call them, I would maybe frame it as you're not sure what to do but didn't want to do nothing, if that makes sense.

Dogs shouldn't be left in a car for that long. I'd feel exactly the same as you if I saw this. Are they large dogs?

kjhkj · 10/12/2019 10:58

It isn't the middle of summer and so they're not actually at risk. They're probably perfectly fine.

LoseLooseLucy · 10/12/2019 10:58

It's the only instance I would call them tbh.

kjhkj · 10/12/2019 11:00

Plus do you actually know that they're not being checked on regularly? I sometimes take Dpuppy with me in the car and I'll pop out and check on him every 20 minutes. He prefers that than being left home on his own for a few hours.

Dogs feel cold differently to us, they run warmer so can tolerate it a bit colder. Not freezing temps though. How cold is it where you are? Do the dogs look cold or distressed? Are they barking continuously or just when you walked past their car?

Eggies · 10/12/2019 11:01

I would they're probably hungry and might have pooped everywhere

How can you possibly know that?!

Horehound · 10/12/2019 11:04

No I don't think I would. What kind of car exactly? Something like a Hilux? They aren't going to freeze and no chance of overheating!

TryTry123 · 10/12/2019 11:08

You could call RSPCA and ask their advice. They will know what is appropriate. If the dogs are barking they may be distressed.

?!?

The fact that they’re barking makes me concerned. But the fact they’re in the car in December doesn’t. Mine is happy being left in a crate in the car but unhappy being left in a crate at home (🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️). If I have to leave him for a couple of hours then I walk him first and offer him a drink, he has a big blanket and a heat pad and occasionally a chew. But 9/10 he just falls asleep in there.

What happened in the end?

The original post was over 5 hours ago. Hope the dogs aren't still there!

HollysBush · 10/12/2019 16:37

So school run til nearly 11, that’s about 2 and a half hours? What’s the problem in cool ( but not freezing) weather?
Hungry? Most dogs have one or two meals per day and adults should be able to go approx 6 hours between wees ( not saying that they should be left alone that long)
