Can anybody translate this shorthand?

(Light hearted)My mother thinks she has the upper hand because for thirty years none of us have been able to read her secret notes. She doesn't agree that modern day technology can foil her attempts to write in code.

Can anyone break the code?

Can anybody translate this shorthand?

Could it be golf? Just found this in my dictionary!

Teeline shorthand is still taught to news reporters. It's mostly useful for court reporting now, as everyone records stuff elsewhere on phones, but it is still useful!

ChipInTheSugar · 09/12/2019 11:38

Like a PP this is making me to relearn !

ChristmasCroissant · 09/12/2019 13:01

The letter-based shorthand (if u cn rd) was called Speedwriting

LaLoose · 09/12/2019 13:01

It IS Teeline! Teeline is alphabetical, so the actual letters written here are:

NSW of JPment DRless of JWLs.

Wink

Bet you're glad I came along.

Did wonder before thinking gloves if it was clothes with an upward curved l but felt it was more like gloves. The Janice isn't quite it from the last symbol, more of a ths but people have their own little quirks don't they. Similarly Judy, wouldn't really be above the line but then....
Shorthand was amazing to learn, 120 wpm Pitmans very useful at work back in the day.

HotWaterBottleAndABottleOfWine · 09/12/2019 17:02

The presents are not where you think they are

angeldelightforbreakfast · 09/12/2019 21:58

Some of these answers really made me laugh!

To those of you who want to know it says

Present for Jyoti
Chocolate for Jonathan

disclaimer I do not have any clue how accurate my mother's fifty year old Pitmans is, but she's impressed that I worked out the first one at least (and is quite confused as to why I'm talking about gloves and wardrobes Smile)

OP posts:
Costacoffeeplease · 09/12/2019 22:22

There’s no way I can see chocolate there, and Jonathan doesn’t have an ‘s’ in it. I think she may have given Pitmans her own special twist Smile

theemmadilemma · 09/12/2019 22:28

I love how shorthand becomes so personalised. It's a shame I didn't keep it up, I used to be able to do 100 wpm Teeline.

flatshoes · 09/12/2019 22:38

Any more OP don't hesitate, it was brilliant, chuckling at our gloves and wardrobes.

Present for Jyoti is accurate. Chocolate for Jonathan is a bit wrong, I'm afraid, angel delight's mother. It actually reads more like Cocolates for Jonaths or perhaps Nocolates for Jonaths. (Ch should have a hook at the beginning) -HOWEVER, everyone's shorthand is difficult to read by another. I am still working as a sec and still using shorthand (but only for my own ends - no-one expects to dictate letters directly to me any more these days - it has been a good 10 years since I managed to impress anyone I was working for by being able to take instant dictation - they don't even think to ask now). I learned my shorthand (pitmans) in 1976/7.

evilharpyinapeartree · 09/12/2019 23:18

This is fascinating! I've always wished I knew shorthand. Can't imagine it would be much use to me now as I haven't worked as a secretary or PA for years and I type at around 100wpm so shorthand wouldn't be much quicker, but I still think it's a fab skill to have.

Post more please, so interesting reading everyone's guesses.

JellyfishAndShells · 09/12/2019 23:26

I learnt Teeline 40 years ago as part of my journalist’s training - still use it to make shopping lists and similar notes. It does change and become very personal - found my original work book recently and my version was very sloppy in comparison. But I can read it back and that is what matters !

Equanimitas · 10/12/2019 00:37

(Ch should have a hook at the beginning)

Not when I learnt. Ch was made by a thing like a backslash, and to show the "o" sound it should be above the line. A hook at the beginning would make a "c" sound into "cl".

Equanimitas · 10/12/2019 00:39

I still use bits of shorthand when I'm taking notes, but it's generally short phrases like "in the", "of the" or "at the same time". When people offer to type up my notes they don't believe me when I tell them they have no hope of reading them - until they actually try.

ZaZathecat · 10/12/2019 10:56

My late dm used to use her Pitman's shorthand to write out the Christmas present list 😀 She was a whizz at shorthand and I bet she would have translated it in a shot. I miss my mum.

SheSaidHummingbird · 10/12/2019 18:55

See? I was totally correct.

somm · 10/12/2019 20:50

I learned Teeline at technical college in the late 1970s (as well as typing) as part of a business studies course. I used to transcribe what was being said to be into shorthand in my head (presumably many people do this when becoming conversant with a foreign language?). I became very proficient and, as for the typing, I'd started to teach myself how to type at home from a library book [oh the days when you had access to knowledge in a local library] so I was ahead when I started at college.

This thread has reminded me that I was using shorthand to make notes up until about 10 years ago, but now I'm not sure I could transcribe it. It probably tapered off naturally because now a lot of the time I can't read back my own handwriting, so I wouldn't have a hope of reading back my shorthand. The joys of getting older :-(
