Parking one!

I am pretty sure that I am in the right but I enjoy the parking posts so thought that I would share. Car park for children's football game was packed so I found a road near the venue with no lines. I parked in a space with no dropped kerb, no painted lines and no parking signs. I didn't park on the pavement as the car already there hadn't and because it is for pedestrians. When I returned I found this note and the authors (man and woman plus 2 children) arguing with my friend who had parked similarly. There was enough space for cars to easily pass me so they weren't blocked in. You don't park on pavements because that it inconsiderate. The only point that may have been valid, I had not considered this, was that a fire engine may not have got through. How much wider than a car is a fire engine? I think that they might have had to go onto the grass/gravel if they are much wider than a car. So WIBU? Please also enjoy their grammatical mistakes as much as I did.

No, YANBU. Perfectly valid place to park. If there were issues with parking there, there would be double yellows.

Here is 2 screen shots. One shows my car - width with wing mirrors out is 2117cm.
The other is a standard UK fire engine which is 2.3m.

YANBU if there’s no lines or signs, you’re legally allowed to park there

userabcname · 08/12/2019 12:54

Yanbu! I'd be so tempted to correct their errors in red pen and post it back through their door.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 08/12/2019 13:00

This is the exact set up in my road. It takes a bit of juggling to get out of the drive sometimes but it's not impossible! If the road is clear I always reverse park on my drive to make it easier to get out again.
It's a pain but it's a public road so it's tough really.
I have a little car though. Do they have massive cars op?

brighteyeowl17 · 08/12/2019 13:04

If no double yellows no reason no to park there!

I lived opposite sports pitches. We had white lines opposite drives plus sign posts saying not to park opposite drives. On really busy days you could barely fit a car down the road as people would park up to the edge of the drives on the pavement one side, and onto the verge the other side.
People parking opposite driveways did block them on.

A couple of times we did have to ask people to move. We were polite, people were apologetic as they hadn't seen the road markings.

countdowntochristmas · 08/12/2019 13:15

I can see both sides where I live at the bottom of the road cars park on one side as not enough room if cars park on both sides unless you park on the pavement. So yeah in the circumstance I'd be annoyed because many a time my sons school bus can't get down the road because of cars parking on both sides so a fire engine won't . Perhaps the common sense should be to park on the pavement if no where else to park . pedestrians can walk round but a fire engine can't .

Pipandmum · 08/12/2019 13:21

You may have a legal right to park there but if you had other options not to park directly across from someone's drive making it tricky to get out you should have done so. But I dont agree with lacking on the curb unless it specifically says yo do so (by white lines indicating)

MistyCloud · 08/12/2019 13:58

@tinyme77 YABU. If you can park a couple of car-lengths further down, then why do you park opposite this person's driveway? Yeah I am sure you're not breaking any laws, but just because you CAN do something, doesn't necessarily mean you SHOULD!

Maybe people can get out of the drive (sometimes) with a lot of effort and manoeuvring, and much twisting and turning,' but why should they have to tolerate that when you could just park 25 to 30 feet further down? It's just selfish and lazy.

As someone who has to tolerate people parking opposite me, virtually on a daily basis, for the last 2 years, I am on the side of the person who wrote the stroppy note. They have probably had a bellyful of people parking opposite their drive, and making it awkward to get out of the drive - or into it. (Sometimes impossible if they are parked 2 or 3 feet away from the path.)

Various people park opposite our driveway most days, to visit the person who lives opposite us, (for one to two hours, and sometimes twice or even 3 times a day,) The person opposite has a 3 car driveway, but they can't be arsed to spend the 10 seconds it would take to park it on the driveway. It's selfish and lazy behaviour. DH has had times when he has come in from work, and has had to park 2-3 minutes walk away because he can't get on our drive because of people parked directly opposite. (And no - he really can't - before anyone says anything!)

It's got to the point now , where we park our car on the road next to our driveway, if we are going out anywhere in the next 2 to 4 hours, so we can know we will be able to get out with no problem. We have been trapped in our driveway a number of times, and have had to go knocking on the door opposite to ask someone to move their car!

And again, NO, we couldn't get our car out before anyone asks. On some occasions we can get out with a real struggle, but not without clipping the alloy wheels, or kerbing the bloody tyres. Why should we do that, just because someone is too selfish and lazy to park on their driveway, and prefers to park directly opposite someone's drive?! (Even when they have a 3-car driveway!!!)

Why can't they park on the driveway??? WE park on OUR driveway. (Except, as I said, on the occasions when we are going out, and that is necessary, because there is no guarantee we will be able to get off the driveway when we want to go out!)

As I said, they are just selfish and lazy.

MistyCloud · 08/12/2019 13:58

@Pipandmum

You may have a legal right to park there but if you had other options not to park directly across from someone's drive making it tricky to get out you should have done so.

Yep, this. ^

I know loads of people come onto these type of threads and say people complaining about people parking on the road, and making it hard for them to get out are being unreasonable, and 'they can park where they like if they are not breaking any laws!'

But I reckon most people would be pissed off if it kept happening to them, no matter how much they deny it. (Also, these posters are probably the ones who park where the hell they like, no matter how it inconveniences people, just because they can!)

Spam88 · 08/12/2019 14:05

Legally you did nothing wrong, but I always avoid parking opposite peoples driveways wherever I can.

donquixotedelamancha · 08/12/2019 14:26

Another vote for: don't block people in.

rhubarbcrumbles · 08/12/2019 14:28

If it's possible that a fire engine might not have got through then YABU.
