To wrap Christmas presents in newspaper?

My family seem to think so! 😂 I read an article about how wasteful Christmas is, and one of my New Years resolutions is going to be about reducing the waste I produce because I do think that I mindlessly produce quite a lot. In the article it said how wrapping paper is non recyclable and really damaging. I am living back at home atm and my mum buys a newspaper everyday so I have decided to wrap my presents in her old newspapers. My mums response was “well they’re not going under MY tree”. The rest of my family seem a bit miffed too. I should add that my family is all adults, I’ve not bought for any children whatsoever so surely grown adults can deal with wrapping paper that isn’t very pretty and shiny?

I do this. Last year I tied up with "ribbons" made by cutting an old and busted pair of jeans into long strips and decorated with sprigs of herbs from the garden.

BTW you can make a nice bottle gift bag out of the bottom of an old jeans leg and a strip of ribbon. Just hem the cut edge shut and add the ribbon as a carrying loop. Decorate with an applique Christmas shape or a stencil or even draw on it with fabric pens.

YANBU I sometimes use that brown paper that is used to fill up Amazon boxes, or old shoe boxes decoupaged with christmassy bits cut out of all the junk mail magazines and catalogues that come through the door at this time of year.

good for you. i use brown parcel paper and raffia. it wouldn't bother me/i'd appreciate the effort to be less wasteful.

YABU. Have your own views on reducing waste and all that but don’t foist them on everyone else in hideous ways.

They wouldn’t be going anywhere near my tree either.

We won't necessarily be using newspaper but will be using brown paper, ribbon, other wrappings which can either be reused in the future, or is recycled. I do have some very nice wrapping paper from Oxfam (bought last year in the sale) which is brown paper with a printed design and can be recycled. It's so much crisper and nicer than nasty cheap "soft" wrapping paper. I have also done things in the past like tying spare baubles onto ribbon to decorate parcels, or using wool or something.

Personally, I think a present wrapped in plain brown paper or newspaper and with a lovely tartan or satin ribbon is very chic - far nicer than generic cheapo wrapping paper.

PineappleDanish Funny. I think it’s really boring and ugly. Each to their own 🤷‍♀️

Though of course if I ever knew anyone that gave me a present in newspaper/brown paper I would be polite and thank them, but inside I would be rolling my eyes and thinking it was hideous. As I suspect most people would.

At the risk of sounding like Scrooge , it is slightly ridiculous to worry about the environmental impact of the wrapping paper when the item you have bought will probably have had a greater impact

Brown paper and butchers string, fabric homemade flowers this year

Whattodoabout · 09/12/2019 18:23

I’m using brown paper with some twine and also have bought a Christmas stamp set to stamp the brown paper and make it look a bit prettier.

Newspaper is ok if you actually buy newspapers, it’s weird going to specifically buy newspapers to wrap gifts.

Depends on the item. If you’re talking about a brand new crappy plastic toy you have a point. Plenty of ethical gifts out there though or second hand stuff.

Craftycorvid · 09/12/2019 18:27

Fine by me (but if you wrap my presents in ‘The Sun’ I will judge you). Grin

I recently attended a baby shower for a work colleague, many of the guests who are environmentally aware, chose to wrap gifts in colourfull teatowels, which looked very good as well as being practical

OlaEliza · 09/12/2019 23:54

I was going to use cloth shopping bags tied up with string or ribbon this year.
