To not want to see this doctor?

So I've finally bitten the bullet and gone to the docs about my ongoing lack of pelvic floor, despite religiously doing all the exercises - well, it was that or start buying shares in Tena...

GP referred me, I had the appt last week, v. nice consultant, has put me forward for tests, says to me 'and I'll need to see you 2 weeks after the tests'. Appointments were thus made.

I get a letter this morning saying my appt has been changed 'due to unforseen circs' and although it's the same day, same time, it's with another consultant.

Without wishing to name names, this consultant is notorious in our area for his poor to non-existent bedside manner, and last year he was up before the BMC for botching an operation and ruining some poor woman's waterworks. I looked up the ruling this morning and apparently he's not allowed to undertake pelvic floor surgery for another year and also has to attend weekly 'supervisory' meetings.

So I ring up the hozzie and ask if there's someone else I can see, or if the appt can be rearranged so I get to see my original consultant. They go away and mutter for a bit, then come back and tell me that my consultant is RETIRING at the end of the month, which is why all his cases have been given to the other geezer.

Now, 1) why the blinking flip couldn't he have told me that when asking me to make another appt to see him? He must've known he wasn't going to be there, surely??

and 2) Am I being unreasonable in thinking that if this other bod is under supervision and not allowed to do operations, what the flipping blink are they going doing giving him the other guy's caseload?

I was told if I wanted to see someone else, I would have to go back to my gp and get re-referred.

Dunno what to do at the moment - while I'm sure everyone makes mistakes and is entitled to a second chance, I'm not sure I want him to have his second chance with my pelvis, iykwim? I also don't want to have to wait another 6 months for another appointment... aaargh!

i wouldnt want to see him either!

I'd ring the hospital and kick up a stink and demand for another consultant as you know this ones past and are not happy with him being your consultant!

good luck!

I would ask if there was another consultant you could see. If not, can you have one from a neighboring PCT? I would tell them exactly why you do not want to see him, and that you know he's not allowed to operate. If you get no joy, go to see your MP. I have a child with brain damage caused by incompetant NHS staff - you are NOT being unreasonable at all.

Oh Nat, I'm so sorry

I did tell the hospital why I didn't want to see him and said I found it quite disturbing that he was taking on the senior consultant's caseload when he was still supposedly under supervision - however, all this was to the outpatients' booking clerk and although she was a very nice person, I doubt it went any further!

Thanks for reassuring me that I'm not being paranoid or unreasonable . I will go back to my gp and see if I can go to the other hospital in the area or else go private (thankfully I have insurance). That's if I can get an appointment to see her between now and Crimbo...

Speak to your GP about this.

It's possible he/she already knows this consultant has issues and knows a workround.

Nat1H · 22/08/2007 23:09

Can you speak to the 'nice' consultants secretary? She may be able to help you more than anybody. Just ring up the hospital and ask to speak to MR...'s secretary. By the way, don't feel sorry for me - DS2 is the most gorgeous child you could ever hope to meet! It has just made me SUPER wary about health 'professionals'. Hope you get a decent consultant in the end - Don't take no for an answer!! Keep me posted

as well as the other advice, ask your GP about referral for physio too. A relative of mine has similar probs, has seen a physio alongside the gynae investigations.
