AIBU?

To hate builders, roofers, etc for being so fucking careless

Just had my garden ruined by builders. They seem to view anything that belongs to anyone else as just junk to be smashed up. They've broken fencing and a large, irreplaceable planter, as well as several smaller items and plants themselves.
They also moved a large planter (fair enough) but moaned when I insisted they put it back when they'd finished.
They've also left a huge pile of debris - is that normal?!
I live alone and feel a bit under siege, as well as not physically being able to deal with some of the things. I've already had to clean up, pick concrete lumps out of everything.
Just feel so sad that my lovely little garden i worked on was damaged by these fuckers.
NB. I live in a rented flat so it's not my choice. If anyone has any idea how I can get rid of the dangerous pile of broken bits that would be helpful.
I've lived here many years and it happens every time - not just one lot of builders.

Am I being unreasonable?

Can you speak to your landlord about this?

Are they builders you hired? Of course they should clean up and pay for broken items. If you are living there they should clean up every day. If they are not your builders go talk to whomever hired them. I renovate properties and I always go to the neighbors and give my contact details and insist my builders respect everyone's property etc.

Hmm, thanks Pipandmum, it sounds like it's just shoddy builders my landlord hires rather than builders etc in general then! (Similar has happened a few times here.)

They were working on the outside of the properties, scaffolding up etc. Big pile of wood, slates, bricks and rubbish in the garden now.

I have just had a house built in my garden and found it to be true of the the majority of builders and others tradespeople too.

The actual builders were the worst - broke things, got mortar all over everything in sight and just used whatever they could lay their hands on for their own purpose.

I'm sure they aren't all like that but my experience was not good, even with guys that I got on with - they just don't seem to see things in the same way.

Are they independent or employed by a company do you know? If employed by a company call head office and request they come back and clear the mess, and replace anything they have broken. I would also contact your landlord and ask him to do the same as essentially his contractors have caused damage to your property, and ask him to reimburse you for the cost.
In my experience you have to set out very clear ground rules as soon as they arrive, and insist on them clearing up every day. It sounds as though the guys you have may be more used to working on sites rather than private homes.

My parter is also a builder and takes pride and cleans up after himself and others especially in other people properties. I don't understand the stereotype that follows them. They are not all like this.

Yep, a lot of them are pretty careless. When our office landlord replaced our roof, they used a well known reputable local firm, but they were absolutely awful. My office door was under the scaffolding and they'd just randomly throw debris down without anyone at ground level looking out, such as big pieces of wood, bags of slate tiles etc. Time and time again I warned them to either stop throwing stuff down or at least have someone looking out for people coming in/our of our office, all fell on deaf ears - they didn't give a toss. Then at home, we had scaffolders who dropped a bracket through our glass conservatory roof after we asked them to cover it to prevent that happening.

We’ve had some lovely clean and tidy builders, and some that have left a path of destruction in their wake. We’ve also had planters broken, wooden floors cut on/through, walls scraped to pieces, and as you said bloody mortar slopped everywhere. All you can do is take pictures and complain.
