To not give someone 20p

TrulyMadlyBeefly · 06/12/2019 15:14

I have just been stopped the the street and asked for 20p. My auto response is always sorry, no. Get asked a lot.

It just seemed an odd amount to ask for. It's also an area notorious for moped crime and I'm wondering if it was a ploy to get my purse out and snatch it.

Am I overthinking this Confused

Wow, why so stingy? IF I have change on me and someone asks me for 20p I give them a quid. They ask for small amounts because 'I need 20p for the bus/phone/toilet' gets more success than can you donate to my next drink/drugs/tobacco/food.

Tana433 · 06/12/2019 20:04

A woman stopped me and asked me for 20p so she could get a cup of tea. I gave her 40p and told her to get one for me too!!

Drabarni · 06/12/2019 20:34

There are 320,000 people registered as homeless.
I don't care what they say they want the money for, they're homeless and worse off than me. Just Grin

Pinkblueberry · 06/12/2019 20:37

Sorry no change. I use my contactless all the time so I’m not even lying.

ForalltheSaints · 06/12/2019 21:18

I doubt if it was to steal your purse. If you want to support the homeless, I suggest a charity donation.

TrulyMadlyBeefly · 06/12/2019 21:23

@user27495824 I disagree. Living in London, being asked for money is a daily experience.

Was it Oxford Circus / Tottenham Court Road OP? If so, there's this person who has been asking for this sum for years. Mental health issues I think.

Sparklesocks · 06/12/2019 21:28

Someone homeless people ask for small amounts as a strategy, people are more likely to give them twenty pence than a quid so they go for the numbers game. And then some people think oh well they were polite and only wanted 20p but I’ll give them 50p to help them out.

UtuNorantiPralatongsThirdEye · 06/12/2019 21:31

I'm so glad I gave her the money now, what a state to be in. I often wonder what awful life experiences these people must have

That's my reasoning when I give money (I don't like to give food as I feel it takes away some of their dignity).

TrulyMadlyBeefly · 06/12/2019 21:33

Not Oxford Street @Mummyshark2019

No. Always say no.

Cailleachian · 06/12/2019 21:42

"homeless charities say don't give money directly, rather give to the charities."

They would say that tho wouldn't they.

One of the most enraged I have ever been was when I was accosted by an aggressive beggar from Shelter demanding a sizable monthly donation, while someone homeless sat quietly not 4 feet away from him, hoping to pick up a bit of spare change.

CheeseAndOnionIceCream · 06/12/2019 21:52

In my local high street, there's a man that we call '80p man'. He gets bloody everywhere. He pesters people in coffee shops and on buses,as well as people who walk past him. He even goes up to crowded bus stops and says in a loud voice 'Can anyone here spare me 80p?'. When people politely say sorry,no,he starts being rude and shouting 'For fuck's sake! What is WRONG with people?!'. Er ,your attitude, probably!

RozHuntleysStump · 06/12/2019 22:05

They’ll get nowt from me unless they start accepting Apple Pay.

bluesatinmanolos · 07/12/2019 10:09

Roz Well, some of the homeless do have QR codes now.
