To do a Christmas stocking for my friend?

Minionbums · 06/12/2019 13:51

I have a wonderful friend who’s normally nice husband never, ever buys her presents. She’s sad she might not have any presents on Christmas Day.

We don’t usually buy gifts for each other, but I was thinking of getting her something (secretly, so she doesn’t think she has to reciprocate).

Does it sound shit to do her a Christmas stocking with bits in? Money is tight so it will only be little cheap things - does anyone have any ideas?? (I picked up a nail varnish in Poundland yesterday, and I had loads of hand cream for my birthday so one of those, some sweets).

So lovely... do it!

festivemum · 06/12/2019 13:52

That sounds lovely, if it was me I would really appreciate the thought.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 06/12/2019 13:54

That’s a lovely idea
It needs a satsuma and some chocolate coins.
A bottle of bubble bath will fill it out nicely (the mermaid or unicorn imperial leather ones are pretty good and only £1)

ParkheadParadise · 06/12/2019 13:56

That's so nice of you. What about a shampoo and conditioner. You can also get them in Poundland.

Honeyroar · 06/12/2019 13:56

Sounds lovely. You’re a great friend.

How about a chocolate orange, a little candle in a tin (Aldi do nice, cheap ones). Little bits like a nice lip balm. I put a miniature baileys in mine too.

moodolph · 06/12/2019 13:58

A scratch card or lottery ticket?

Minionbums · 06/12/2019 14:06

Such a relief, I was worried it sounds cheap. And what wonderful ideas, I never thought of looking in Aldi, and a lottery ticket is an absolutely brilliant idea!

Something nice and blingy from Claire's.
PJs from Primark.
They have some lovely novelty stuff, a big mug with chocolate and marshmallows for something like 4 pounds or similar.

Hobbesmanc · 06/12/2019 14:27

Awww what a lovely thought. I've just raided B and M for stocking fillers. Lots of cute and funny stuff.

glitterflamingo3 · 06/12/2019 14:29

Wish I had a friend like you. What a nice idea! Maybe a little candle? Have a look in tkmaxx too they have some real bargains, also primark
And b&m xx

Fluffiest · 06/12/2019 14:42

Lovely idea, homebargains also has some excellent gifty things. Scented candles always make me smile.

EerieSilence · 06/12/2019 14:50

They had beautiful snowballs with music in TKMaxx. That would be lovely too.

Gingerkittykat · 06/12/2019 14:50

Poundland have really nice light up bottles, they are identical to more expensive ones and will take up a lot of space in a stocking.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 06/12/2019 14:53

I second Primark. They've got some really nice stuff in which won't break the bank. And it's a lovely thought OP X

Spied · 06/12/2019 14:56

I'd love you as a friend.
Ideas
A book (£4 in supermarkets)
Bath bomb
Compact mirror
Chocolate orange
Diary
Pens
Cosy socks
A lipstick/balm
Little satchets of hot choc
Mallows

TellMeItsNotTrue · 06/12/2019 15:04

Definitely, and it doesn't have to cost much, the best presents have a lot of thought, not necessarily a lot of £

I think it's lovely, so thoughtful ❤️ my parents always said I'd rather you bought me my favourite chocolate bar than spent £50 on some generic gift, it means so much more

TellMeItsNotTrue · 06/12/2019 15:05

What about a tree decoration? Putting it on the tree each year would remind me of the stocking

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 06/12/2019 15:22

Lovely idea!

nameymcnamechangeagain · 06/12/2019 15:27

I think it’s lovely!! Mini bottle of prosseco, SOCKS!!! Chocolate Father Christmas, perfume, costume jewellery, nail files, bath bomb, key ring, nice pen...

nameymcnamechangeagain · 06/12/2019 15:29

They have nice pens with large “diamond” on top in the works...

Butchyrestingface · 06/12/2019 15:33

I’d buy her a consultation with a divorce lawyer (probably not quite what you’re after, OP). Xmas Wink

Hard to believe otherwise exemplary husband morphs into Ebenezer at Xmas only.

Ponoka7 · 06/12/2019 15:56

I think that you could cause trouble. Or she'll feel embarrassed.

Surely it would be better to have a quiet word with the husband?

MiddleClassProblem · 06/12/2019 16:00

If you have a Tiger (or flying tiger) or Hema they can be great for this x

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/12/2019 16:01

My wonderful friend does me a Christmas stocking - and I love it! Little bits and pieces that she thinks I will love or find useful.

Pretty fold-up bags
A few really nice chocolates
Something for my hobby
A book she thinks I might like (usually from The Works) or a magazine

Little bits like this. This year I'm doing her a similar one - she only has one ASD son who gets her a box of Poundland chocolates every year and she's a widow, so she doesn't get much in the way of presents and she's always very grateful for anything!

Minionbums · 06/12/2019 16:02

I would never have a word with the husband! I don’t know him anywhere near as well as I know her. I am a bit worried about making her feel embarrassed or whatever... I won’t badge it as ‘your husband isn’t good so here’s a present’ - it’ll be more ‘youve had a bad year, here’s a present’.

It’s not just at Christmas - it’s all gifts for all people all year.
