I hope im not alone

My 14 year old is now in mens clothes and a huge size 9 feet, he will refuse point blank to wear anything except nike and adidas (that includes socks) and his new obsession is only wearing CK boxers Confused
We havent got huge amounts of money and at just under £30 per pair of trousers i would never afford a full wardrobe of clothes.
He has 3 or 4 trousers and 5/5 tops as he chucked out all his clothes that werent brand named.
He had £110 the other day and all he managed to get was 2 tops, 2 trousers and 1 pair firetrap jeans.
He knows i cant afford these expensive clothes and £170 trainers, but he wont accept primark or cheaper sports brand.
And £20 for 2 pairs of boxers is ridiculous (he used his pocket money for them)
He gets his expensive trainers and football boots at christmas because i refuse to pay that amount of money when every month hes moaning his feet are growing and shoes getting small, he got new football boots a size bigger for his birthday last month and i could have exploded when he said last week they are getting tight and need new ones soon.

I feel cruel he dont have lots of clothes, but what can i do when he will refuse to wear anything without a brand, hes so materialistic its annoying.

Look on m and m direct lots of brands but at half the price of the shops - you do have to pay for postage and a returns label. They don’t have the latest foot wear but they do have Nike and Adidas joggers and tops.

When I was a teen it seemed like all the popular girls got all their clothes from Benetton that shows my age but DM made mine and cut my hair badly. I desperately wanted to fit in, so perhaps I'm not as tough as I could be with DS 13. However I have learnt to set him a limit. He has wide feet so it's hard to get trainers for him and on our second last Nike outlet visit I was conned into getting an expensive pair. Last time I gave him a £100 limit, but as he also wanted a new hoodie and socks suddenly the £45 pair became acceptable.

It is very difficult. On the one hand you have to be careful because sometimes there is the danger of the child going and finding a way to procure these items himself. On the other, he needs to understand there is only so much you can or are prepared to spend. And ultimately, he needs shoes that fit as it’s not his fault he’s growing.
His allowance sounds OK to me but perhaps encourage him to make more money himself (wash neighbours’ cars, cut the grass, run errands for people, dog walking etc. Find out if any of your friends or family can give him little jobs. Tutor younger children, football coaching. Help someone clear a garage and sell what he can on eBay for a %). Once he earns however little, his spending ideas will reduce considerably.

My mum would have laughed in my face if I said I wanted designer/branded stuff when I was a teen! Luckily my friends were not judgy about that stuff - neither were people at school really. I don't really know anyone who was bullied because they didn't wear the 'right' stuff. Maybe its different these days, but I'm only in my 30s.

Is there a way he can earn his own money OP? Maybe if he realises how much minimum wage is he will see how many hours he'd have to work for his previous branded stuff.

Shit sorry reread your OP he's only 14 - maybe a while yet for a job!

I was the exact same as a teen and I come from a poor one parent family. Unfortunately my mum gave into me racking up debt through catalogue orders. I got the rest via grandparents who would buy my branded shoes and even school shoes had to be right. I obviously feel bad about this now but I nanny for teenagers who are the exact same but the difference is have wealthy families so it's not a problem.... Nike and Adidas aren't even good enough for the 15 year old it's all Armani and RL. To your son he feels the pressure you're feeling probably from the other kids but I would sit down and explain your money situation, bills etc. And say it's a simple no on certain things.
Bloody hard though!

Nike outlets. My teen got a >£100 pair of trainers for £30.

We all shop there in fact. Plus sportswear.

Tkmaxx for CK underwear.

mine LIKE adidas and nike and branded stuff, but I wouldnt be able to afford to get them everything in those brands. I dont mind getting them the trainers as they are good quality, and I dont mind getting them the odd Tshirt, but no way would they have everything branded. They need to compromise
